Kobenhavn/Roskilde Airport (EKRK)

by Johannes2026-03-02 21:24:29 UTC

Last update 2016-07-01: AD staff are very helpful and cheerful. Roskilde APPR and TWR are in the same control tower; the same person works both frequencies when traffic volume is low. On first arrival, you can pre-fill the info sheet from the homepage to speed up processing on site. Metal tie-down rings embedded in the concrete on the apron. Bring your own tie-down ropes. Hangars are private and priced for jets (600€/night). Taxi from the apron to the fuel station while maintaining a listening watch on the TWR frequency. Taxi to Roskilde St approx. 30€, from there trains every 10 to 20 min to Copenhagen for 96 DKK = 13€ per person. Unlock your DriveNow account for Copenhagen in advance as it requires 1 day. No DriveNow cars at the airport, but if you go city–EKRK–city it’s about 75€ (incl. 30 min parking). Bistro at the airport: Mon–Thu 07:30–14:00 LT, Fri 07:30–13:30 LT, Sat/Sun closed. On-field maintenance: DAO, very helpful.

Last update 2016-06-30: The GA airport in Copenhagen. Staff very helpful, assist with technical issues and keep the mood upbeat. In bad weather and with no traffic, IFR Visual Approach with full latitude. In the evening, APPR & TWR are handled by the same controller. For the first visit, fill out the self-report form from the homepage in advance; saves work on site. 999 kg MTOW take-off fees 78,36 DKK = 10,77€; incl. 3 days parking at 56,93 DKK = 7,83€ each => 170,79 DKK = 23,48€; total: 34,25€. Metal tie-down rings in the concrete on the apron; bring your own ropes. Hangar mainly for jets (600€/night). Fuel self-service pump by Shell or Air BP (taxi from the apron with listening watch). Air BP Carnet (AVGAS 1,99€/L). Taxi to Roskilde St approx. 30€; from there a train every 10 to 20 min to Copenhagen for 96 DKK = 13€ per person. Have your DriveNow account for Copenhagen enabled in advance (takes 1 day). City–EKRK–city approx. 70€ (incl. 30 min parking). Bistro at the airport: Mon–Thu 07:30–14:00 LT, Fri 07:30–13:30 LT. On-field maintenance: DAO.

Uetersen/Heist Airport (EDHE)

by Johannes2026-03-02 21:23:04 UTC

Great GA field near Hamburg, unfortunately without public transport. IFR from the northeast. Bremen RDR offers 3 options: a) around Class C of EDDH b) through Class C of EDDH at ca. 5000ft c) through the CTR with TWR at ca. 2000ft. With b), after leaving Class C it's almost a dive from 5000ft to 0ft, as EDHE is very close by. Nice long, wide grass runway in good condition. Parking on grass, tie-down ropes available and anchored in the ground. Hangars are private and all occupied. 999kg MTOW LDG 6,70€ + 1 day parking 4,65€ => 11,35€. Self-service pump (Super Plus 1,51€/L, AVGAS, JET-A1), payment in the C by EC card/MC/VISA/cash. Taxi to Pinneberg Bhf. ca. 20min & 32€, then S3 (with intermediate stops, ca. 40min) or RB (direct, ca. 20min) to HH-HBf, both 3,20€/person. Due to taxi costs and long transfer time, for a short stay without refueling it is overall cheaper to land at EDDH. Restaurant new, good kitchen, fair prices, great view, live broadcast of the soccer European Championship. IFR clearance in the air with Bremen RDR.

Eichsfeld Airport (EDHD)

by Johannes2026-03-02 21:21:28 UTC

Last update 2016-09-14: Approach/departure to/from the east: light turbulence possible with winds over trees/low hills.

Nice 700 m asphalt runway and well-maintained grass runway. Parking on grass.

No fuel available. Sometimes coffee is available.

Ground transportation: taxi only (sometimes a fellow pilot can give you a ride).

On weekends: Landing fees €8 for E-class aircraft, €5 for UL/MoSe. Overnight grass parking area: €7.

PPR on weekdays: €25.

Names changed several times; brief overview: DDR: Agrarflugplatz Günterode; from April 1991: Segelfluggelände Günterode; early 2011: change from Segelfluggelände Günterode/Heiligenstadt to Sonderlandeplatz Göttingen-Heilbad Heiligenstadt; since 20 July 2016: Sonderlandeplatz Eichsfeld.

Hamburg Airport (EDDH)

by Johannes2026-03-02 21:10:02 UTC

Last update 2016-07-01: IFR slot required; see http://www.fhkd-speicher.org/. GCR format not necessary; just call +49 69 257585120.

VFR arrival via harbor and Alster, 2× 360 to wait, "keep speed up", long landing to vacate RWY quickly.

IFR departure RWY23, intersection U; due to lower performance compared to an airliner: frequency change before 2000 ft and vectors away from the SID.

Apron 4 is directly in front of the GAT and within walking distance. Apron 2 is a bit farther and requires a bus shuttle due to crossing a taxiway. If you are only picking up a passenger, call directly before takeoff and ask for short-term parking (<1 h) on Apron 4—sometimes you are lucky. Airport is expensive but a bus stop is within walking distance (5 min).

In comparison to Uetersen (EDHE), you pay more for the airport but save on taxi costs (65€ round trip from Uetersen to Pinneberg station) and time. Café next to the GAT is nice and has a good view.

Last update 2016-06-30: IFR slot required; see http://www.fhkd-speicher.org/. GCR format not necessary; just call +49 69 257585120.

VFR arrival via the harbor and the Alster, two 360° orbits, then to RWY15 (plan fuel for the wait); "keep speed up", long landing to delay other traffic as little as possible.

Fuel: AVGAS truck comes to the aircraft; AirBP carnet; 2,424€/L.

IFR departure RWY23, intersection U. Due to lower performance than an airliner: frequency change before 2000 ft and vectors away from the SID.

I only picked up 1 PAX. Therefore called two days in advance to ask if short parking directly at the GAT (Apron 4) was possible. Request was accepted but did not work out. Therefore parked on the apron (Apron 2), which requires bus back and forth (time and 8€ each way). The bus driver recommended calling only shortly before departure and asking for Apron 4.

Costs for 999 kg MTOW and approx. 1 h parking: 24,50€ landing, 24,50€ takeoff, 3,85€ position fee, 11,25€ terminal GAT, 2× transport Apron 2 = 16€, total 94,72€. Expensive, but a bus stop is within walking distance (5 min). In comparison, Uetersen is farther and only about 20€ cheaper, due to LDG (6,70€) and taxi to Pinneberg station (round trip 65€).

Niederstetten Airport (ETHN)

by Johannes2026-03-02 21:02:29 UTC

Last update 2015-12-04: Good IFR training field (ILS/NDB). PAR unfortunately u/s. Outside radar ops hours, IFR training requires prior coordination with Langen ACC => check NOTAMs; times sometimes change several times per week. - Rather old and thus very compact IFR approach procedures => saves time and allows more approaches, but they need to be flown precisely. - Everyone very nice & friendly - Coffee free of charge. - Fees inexpensive: e.g. Grumman Tiger AA5 (999kg): landing 5,50€, IFR approach 12€ - MOGAS available - At the approach end RWY 25, a road crosses the runway; it is closed by a red light during approaches. - Busy helicopter traffic (civ + mil) is quite a show.

Linz Airport (LOWL)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:57:24 UTC

Last update 2015-08-18: Practiced IFR approaches; ATC & Tower very helpful.

Parking far from the GAT (piston only, no turbine). No crew bus showed up, so a short walk to the GAT.

GAT very helpful with hotel search. Wi-Fi free of charge.

AVGAS 2,55€/L by fuel truck, Shell; payment cash/credit card to the refueller.

Good value for a full commercial airport: 980kg MTOW, 3x IFR Approach + 1x LDG + 1x apron stand overnight: 26,66€.

Last update 2015-09-23: Addendum to the PIREP of 18.8.2015: The 26,66€ includes only 1x IFR Approach. 2x IFR Approaches were subsequently billed by mail for an additional 22,44€ (i.e. 11,22€ per IFR Approach).

Stuttgart Airport (EDDS)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:53:25 UTC

Last update 2020-07-09: Slot required for the flight plan (as a coordinated Level 3 airport); brief phone call with airport coordination available 24/7 https://fluko.org.

IFR arrival/departure without issues, short taxi from midfield to Apron 2. Parking with Follow-Me, which also takes you the few meters to the GAT.

GAT with a crew lounge including free cold drinks, kitchen, etc., well equipped. Staff very friendly and helpful. Security screening as required at all airports, but fast and a short walk. PAX list (sheet in the older comments below) required under EU regulation as at other aerodromes (e.g., Graz), but reportedly disposed of in the evening.

Price list for GA not published by either the airport or the FBO Kurz Aviation Service. On request, Kurz AS will email a price list to: ops@bac-stuttgart.com. Example Grumman Cheetah AA5 (999 kg MTOM) with 1 crew + 1 PAX: Landing and take-off 33,30€ each; 1 PAX landing/departure 5,23€ each; 1 PAX security charge departure 1,44€; Operation/Terminal Fee ("GAT fee") 29€ => Total 124,70€ for just under 1 hour on the ground. Training flights cost half.

Prior notification by email to FBO Kurz with noise certificate or noise classification (N-Reg) to speed up a quick turn-around. The email existed in hard copy, but its content was not known. On arrival the invoice could not be settled directly, given the direct departure in a few minutes (only a short refreshment stop). At departure the invoice still wasn’t ready, although previously 3 people were behind the counter. Entering all data manually instead of copy&paste took 10 minutes, which then eats into TOBT. Under time pressure you’ll probably need to push the staff more here, even though the information had been provided in advance. The sluggishness in invoicing and the overall high fees reduce the otherwise very good performance to 3 stars.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport (EDFH)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:53:25 UTC

Last update 2020-07-09: Entry from 2017-06-27 (Philipp Tiemann, eddh.de) regarding a good IFR training airfield still applies. Hold at the HAN NDB and 3 approaches went very well. RNP with LPV now available. Unfortunately only low approach, as landing is prohibitively expensive. Depending on the day of the week, Mainz-Finthen (Tower One Restaurant) or Koblenz-Winningen (Delphi Restaurant) are good nearby options for a meal.

Bratislava M. R. Stefanik Airport (LZIB)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:44:52 UTC

Last update 2015-08-18: Large airfield, old charm (old helicopter and aircraft wrecks) and new facilities (e.g., GAT/crew buses, etc.). Small airfield festival during our short visit. ATC and Tower very helpful—for example, takeoff clearance issued even before the run-up. GAT incl. passport control (not needed for us). Everyone at the GAT very friendly and helpful. GAT bar; credit cards accepted. Water/Wi‑Fi free of charge. 980 kg MTOW, 1x IFR approach + 1x LDG: €51.41.

Bologna / Borgo Panigale Airport (LIPE)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:44:52 UTC

Last update 2015-08-18: Ryanair airport – busy. Flying Club unfortunately very dusty. GAT on apron V via TV from taxiway T. On the apron only with Follow-Me. Crew bus on site. GAT almost new. Staff friendly and helpful (hotel search, taxi, etc.). Wi‑Fi free. GAT cash/card. Taxi to Bologna city center 18€ to 22€. Refueling with AirBP on apron N via TM – from TM again with Follow-Me. Approx. 20 min wait for the fueler. Refueling only by fueler, as the pump is locked. Payment at the AirBP office cash/credit card. AVGAS 2,14€/L at AirBP (credit card) 980kg MTOW, 1x IFR approach + 1x LDG + apron parking overnight: 82,67€

Koeln/Bonn Airport (EDDK)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:39:33 UTC

Last update 2021-08-02: For two IFR approaches with low approach, EDDK was OK.

PPR for the IFR approaches on the day of flight had to be obtained in advance via the watch supervisor in Langen. Because other flight schools had already reserved capacity, we had to reschedule our flight.

Controllers and Tower were very friendly and helpful. As a slow 100 kt aircraft, we were vectored onto the approach just before the FAF. "Best forward speed" makes the controllers happy.

Between approaches a "visual break" is offered, which eases the workload for approach control and is therefore appreciated if accepted. For the approach to 14L, that meant turning left before the threshold and proceeding to Wipper VOR (essentially a tighter variant of SID WYP5F).

Landing was unfortunately prohibitively expensive.

Overall, an experience you do once for the EDDK experience. For regular IFR training, other airfields with higher training value are more suitable.

Erfurt Weimar Airport (EDDE)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:39:33 UTC

Last update 2021-08-02: Ideal field for IFR training with VOR/RNAV/ILS/NDB approaches. Flew 3 approaches in peace and quiet, plenty of space on the apron, transport/shuttle to the GAT without issues or waiting. Payment via aerops was quick and easy, pricing is fair. GAT with crew area and coffee machine. Food delivery services also deliver to the GAT in case AirBistro is closed (see below).

Although an inbound leg of 110–120 nm from the Rhine-Main area is required, it’s the most versatile IFR training field without any hassle (unlike some of the usual suspects around EDDF).

Only minor negatives: - The GAT is within the security-restricted area. Therefore, upon arrival from a departure aerodrome without security screening, a security check is required. - Take your pilot license with you for the return to the aircraft. - AirBistro (the only landside dining option) is currently open only in line with the very limited scheduled service due to COVID. (With the tram right outside, you can reach several alternatives if you have some time.)

Dahlemer Binz Airport (EDKV)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:39:33 UTC

Last update 2021-08-02: Landed on a weekday for lunch. 999 kg for under €10 via aerops. Very relaxed; we were the only powered traffic in just under 2 h. Final for RWY 23 slightly shorter than standard due to a noise-sensitive village, but no issue. Few forced-landing options after departure RWY 23 due to the Eifelwald.

Busy glider operations on the northern grass runway — watch for orange rotating beacons!

The restaurant is east of threshold 23 — about 680 m on foot from the Tower — best to ask if you can park in front of Hangar 4 (with the roll-up door) rather than on the apron by the Tower and fuel.

The food is excellent — the Italian chef turns out delicious dishes. The restaurant’s lessor is apparently also a hunter and butcher and supplies the restaurant with fresh ingredients. Terrace overlooking the runway with a glass windbreak like at the seaside. Prices more than fair for the quality (main course €10–€15). Clear recommendation!

Go-kart track right next to the airfield not tested for lack of time, but it’s on the list as a family-friendly destination.

Frankfurt Main Airport (EDDF)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:34:09 UTC

Last update 2020-11-14 - Addendum to the PIREP of 2020-07-09:

Costs for IFR approach to EDDF Frankfurt: DFS €8.58 + DWD €0.18 = €8.76.

Last update 2020-07-09: The COVID-related low traffic at EDDF exceptionally allows even a sluggish 100 kt aircraft, which by no means achieves the otherwise requested 170 kt, to enjoy an IFR approach.

2 days in advance, obtained a general OK by phone from the Langen ACC watch supervisor. Then requested a slot by phone from Airport Coordination (fluko.org) (one arrival and one departure slot for the same time). Filed one IFR flight plan each for arrival and departure. Shortly before departure, as requested, coordinated the exact time once more with the watch supervisor to use a gap between two 'arrival waves'. Flew an ILS and a low approach with a great view. Many thanks to ATC and Tower :) Landing unfortunately prohibitively expensive, hence only 4 stars ;)

Schwaebisch Hall Airport (EDTY)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:33:11 UTC

Last update 2020-08-18 - Addendum to the PIREP dated 2020-07-09:

For a Grumman Cheetah AA5 with 999 kg MTOM, the charges for an IFR approach total 47,49€ (gross incl. 16% VAT), broken down as: - DFS 4,06€ - Landing 15,59€ (without enhanced noise abatement) - IFR approach 27,84€

EDTY does offer good service as a VLP, but airports offer that too, and many are even cheaper. This makes EDTY unattractive as an IFR training field. Fees at EDTY used to be significantly lower.

Last update 2020-07-09: Great field; everything said still applies.

The GAT is currently being expanded, so due to construction there are fewer amenities in the GAT than before. Restroom in a container outside the door. The restaurant in EDTX at the grass strip opposite is currently without an operator. Therefore, take a taxi toward Schwäbisch Hall to the first restaurant along the way (approx. 15 min wait for a taxi, 12€ each way): Reber's Pflug, a rather upmarket hotel with a restaurant, but at lunchtime there’s a cheaper and tasty snack bar with a beer garden out front—from a 6€ currywurst incl. fries to a 30€ foie gras burger plus champagne, everything is possible.

Siegerland Airport (EDGS)

by Johannes2026-03-02 20:29:10 UTC

Last update 2020-07-09: Actually a great IFR training aerodrome, similar to Kassel-Calden but a bit older. Unfortunately, availability cannot be planned reliably. Parachute operations in Breitscheid have priority and render the IFR infrastructure effectively unusable. A bit more cooperation would be desirable. If no parachutists are active, short-notice staffing shortages can also upend plans for an IFR approach. Eventually arrived VFR. Payment via aeroPS 14,30€ for 999kg is quick.

At an 'Info' (AFIS) aerodrome, monitor the frequency for IFR operations. IFR departure then possible without issues.
