Last update 2020-11-14 - Addendum to the PIREP of 2020-07-09:

Costs for IFR approach to EDDF Frankfurt: DFS €8.58 + DWD €0.18 = €8.76.

Last update 2020-07-09: The COVID-related low traffic at EDDF exceptionally allows even a sluggish 100 kt aircraft, which by no means achieves the otherwise requested 170 kt, to enjoy an IFR approach.

2 days in advance, obtained a general OK by phone from the Langen ACC watch supervisor. Then requested a slot by phone from Airport Coordination (fluko.org) (one arrival and one departure slot for the same time). Filed one IFR flight plan each for arrival and departure. Shortly before departure, as requested, coordinated the exact time once more with the watch supervisor to use a gap between two 'arrival waves'. Flew an ILS and a low approach with a great view. Many thanks to ATC and Tower :) Landing unfortunately prohibitively expensive, hence only 4 stars ;)

IFR approaches and midfield crossings are possible for general aviation when traffic permits, with friendly and professional ATC. Slot coordination is required in advance for arrivals and departures. Low approaches and midfield crossings may be offered, but flights over Frankfurt city at or below 1500 ft ALT can conflict with SERA minimum height rules; the regional authority may pursue fines for violations, regardless of ATC clearance. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.

Landing fees are high. Example: landing about €230. Total costs for a short stay can exceed €800 due to landing, start, noise, emissions, parking, and mandatory handling charges. IFR approach fees are much lower; Example: IFR approach about €10. Fuel at the GAT cannot be paid by credit or EC card—only cash or carnet is accepted.

ATC and ground staff are described as exceptionally helpful and accommodating, often granting requests for city overflights or low approaches when possible. The airport is very busy and not beginner-friendly; familiarity with taxiways and frequencies is essential. For most general aviation purposes, alternative airports nearby may be more practical due to cost and operational complexity.
