Pilot Comments for EDME

Was at EDME twice last week for training (PPL + IR). Everything nice and uncomplicated. Large apron with marked parking positions. Surprisingly much movement guidance by AFISO; sometimes feels a bit “tower-like.” Fees (landing + approach) for an IFR approach with a C172 about 50 EUR—fine. The restaurant was closed each time, but I hadn’t checked the opening hours beforehand. One star off because there’s no AeroPS; as a visiting pilot on a training tour you have to shut down and get out to handle payment. Airports like Hof or Friedrichshafen are a bit more customer-oriented in that respect.

EDME offers both VFR and IFR (CAT I, RNAV) approaches, with IFR arrivals incurring a surcharge. The runway surface was renewed but remains uneven in places with patched cracks. Lärmschutz (noise protection) fees are included in the fee structure. The airfield is suitable for stopovers and as a base for training, with friendly and helpful staff, cooperative tower personnel, and a supportive maintenance facility.
Landing fees are described as moderate. Example: landing fee about €20. IFR approach adds about €20 for MTOW under 2t. Payment is possible by cash or card at the tower.
Avgas, Mogas, and Jet A1 are available at the self-service fuel station; payment methods include Total-Carnet, cash, EC, or credit card. Hangar space is sometimes available for overnight stays. A flight planning room with PC-based weather access and WiFi is available in the C-Office.
The on-field Italian restaurant (pizzeria) offers good pizza and an attractive lunch menu; it is closed on Mondays but has improved recently. A beer garden/restaurant ("Bella Italia") is 10 minutes on foot from the airfield and open Mondays.
Ground transport options include taxis to town (about 5 minutes). Accommodation options nearby include Hotel Bachmaier (arrange key collection by phone) and other budget guesthouses; hotel directories are available at the airfield.
Customs/immigration is possible on request; advance coordination required. The UL circuit requires PPR and prior coordination with flight operations. Skydiving activity occurs at the field.
EDME provides practical facilities, moderate fees, helpful staff, multiple fuel types, and convenient food options, making it well-suited for non-commercial general aviation flights including IFR operations. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
