Pilot Comments for EDDE
Klaus
Yesterday we flew VFR from Mönchengladbach to Erfurt. Requested an RNP approach; Tower cleared us immediately without any issues. Everyone at the airport was very friendly, both Tower and the GAT. We were offered a drink right away. The coffee, freshly ground, was very good. Landing fee for Cessna 414 (MTOW 2880 kg): total 110 €.

EDDE (Erfurt) is a large, well-equipped airport with very low traffic and a strong general aviation focus. Both VFR and IFR operations are straightforward, with ILS, RNAV, VOR, and NDB approaches available at both runway ends. ATC is described as professional, patient, and helpful, making the airport suitable for pilots new to controlled airspace or those seeking IFR training. The airport uses Tower, Ground, and Apron frequencies even when traffic is minimal; pilots should be prepared for frequency changes as per published procedures. PPR is generally not required for non-commercial GA except for ultralights (UL), which require PPR or special permission.
Fees are generally considered fair to moderate for an airport of this size, though some find them on the higher side compared to similar German airports. Multiple 2021+ examples show day landing plus parking typically about €25–€30; some reports note additional charges such as a "Grundentgelt Allgemeine Luftfahrt" (general aviation base fee) per movement. Example: landing plus base fee about €70 for a short stay. Overnight parking is usually low-cost; one example gives night parking at about €5. Hangar space is available but relatively expensive (example: hangar about €60/day in winter). Payment by card or app (Aerops) is widely accepted for fees; fuel payment may require BP card or cash.
Facilities include a GA terminal (GAT) with lounge, free coffee and cold drinks, briefing room, and crew area. Staff are consistently described as exceptionally friendly and helpful. Avgas and Jet A1 are available via fuel truck directly at the aircraft; no Mogas is offered. The on-field restaurant/café has limited opening hours tied to airline schedules but food delivery to GAT is possible. An airport hotel previously operated adjacent to the terminal but has closed.
Ground access is excellent: tram line 4 stops directly in front of the terminal every 10–15 minutes (30 minutes on weekends), reaching Erfurt city center in 15–20 minutes without transfers; single tickets cost around €2–€2.50. Car hire from major providers is available onsite; rental car lot may be less visible and require coordination.
Security checks are required for both pilots and passengers when entering airside from landside; bring pilot license/ID for access through designated crew gates (e.g., Gate 3 or Gate 4). Procedures for entering/exiting the GAT may involve different doors than arrival routes—signage can be confusing but staff assist readily.
Customs/immigration are available on request with advance notice by phone or email; contact traffic@edde.aero or +49 361 / 656-2251.
No significant safety issues or noise abatement constraints are reported. The airport offers long runways, ample apron space, quick turnaround times, and short walking distances between parking and terminal.
EDDE provides a relaxed environment with professional service, efficient city access, fair fees for its category, and strong suitability for non-commercial GA operations including IFR training and city visits.
