Airport Syros / Dimitrios Vikelas (LGSO)

by Elmar2025-08-26 20:02:23 UTC

Opening hours as per NOTAM, usually limited to half-day operations. PPR required 24 hours in advance; I sent an e-mail to the contacts listed in the NOTAM and followed up with a phone call a few hours later.
Fees: Landing & handling with AOPA discount € 73.
Direct flight to Croatia without issue (however, according to AOPA Hellas guide only possible during Summer months). Staff were very friendly, turnaround time for a technical stop was 40 minutes.

Airport Pecs/Pogany (LHPP)

by Elmar2025-05-23 00:00:00 UTC

ILS and RNP approaches available (procedural). Very friendly and efficient ops.

Civil Airfield Lampedusa (LICD)

by Elmar2023-04-23 00:00:00 UTC

As previously described; PPR by email is expressly requested, even though the website says otherwise (probably just to have data on file in advance).

RNP on both runways, requests for various estimates. AVGAS is sold by the drum (1 drum of 50 l 225 EUR). Fees for 1315 kg and 2 days of parking just under 80 EUR. Staff consistently helpful and accommodating.

Lampedusa is still very quiet in mid-April. Of course good restaurants, nice beaches, otherwise not much going on. Small car rental companies can be found in town, straightforward.

Civil Airfield Bagicz (EPKG)

by Elmar2020-06-30 00:00:00 UTC

According to the AIP there is a kind of PPR ("arrivals shall be agreed..."), apparently less strict in practice. My inquiry by SMS was answered promptly and positively in English.

Runway OK; taxi cautiously as already described — we did not notice any larger holes.

Currently there is an AVGAS truck with a self-service card terminal at the field. Operating instructions (drain!) and terminal only in Polish, but we received friendly help. At least during the day there generally seems to be someone at the field; radio is air-to-air.

Small cafe at the field. Taxi to Kolberg < 15 EUR.

Landing 50 PLN, overnight 50 PLN each for < 2 t.

Civil Airfield Szczecin Dabie (EPSD)

by Elmar2020-06-30 00:00:00 UTC

According to the AIP, outside the administration’s regular opening hours some kind of PPR (prior arrangement) applies, but no one can be reached by phone or email. On site, no one seems to care either.

Comms were air-to-air, with the paragliders milling around at the runway threshold apparently listening in and stepping a bit aside.

Runway bumpy; taxiway partly with small stones and bumps.

There is an office on the side of the building; enter yourself in the logbook and pay there (40 PLN for < 1.2 t). The aeroclub folks are friendly and very helpful. By taxi you get into town quickly and cheaply.

Overall, an uncomplicated but somewhat adventurous airfield.

Civil Airfield Khrabrovo Airport (UMKK)

by Elmar2019-08-28 00:00:00 UTC

Update on IFR transit through the UMKK FIR, not about Khrabrovo itself: northern overwater transit still possible without prior permission, however MNM FL100 and from TIGNU - KUNER or further north. A transit closer to the coast will not be accepted without permission. Otherwise everything straightforward.

Airport Kärdla (EEKA)

by Elmar2019-08-18 00:00:00 UTC

Nice Info/AFIS aerodrome on the island’s northeastern coast with little scheduled traffic. There is an RNP and an NDB approach. VFR arrival without fixed routes in coordination with AFIS – flight plan required!
Outside AFIS duty hours there is apparently a security guard present who can let you out of the premises – prior coordination is advisable.

AFIS with perfect English, everyone very helpful overall. Also consider AIP Supplements for long-term planning (events, temporary restricted areas, etc.).

The island offers a few quiet beaches, some sights, and otherwise a lot of forest. A car is highly recommended for exploring. We got one at short notice and without bureaucracy from Tevi Car (tevi.ee, cash only, taxi Airport – Tevi approx. 12 EUR).

Fees at 1.4 t: landing approx. 16 EUR, nav charge approx. 6 EUR, parking just under 4 EUR/day.

Civil Airfield Spilve (EVRS)

by Elmar2019-08-18 00:00:00 UTC

Our PPR via email was answered promptly, but mainly with the note to familiarize yourself with the special procedures. These are described in detail in the AIP, including maximum altitudes and radio procedures. Position reports were also made in English by local pilots. Departure via the north transit route with a Z-Plan also completely trouble-free.

The runway is OK in the area of threshold 32 and a bit beyond; toward the middle it gets rather poor. The taxiways are now very poor — taxi very slowly and watch for potholes...

On the apron (!), be prepared for trikes that take off, land, and maneuver low-level more or less cross-country.

Bus line 3 departs around the corner and goes directly to the city center (ticket from the driver 2 EUR).

Thanks to its Russian charm, Spilve remains a highlight and is also very well connected transport-wise — however, due to the dilapidated runway, to be enjoyed with some caution. Riga is worth seeing!

Currently no AVGAS (no NOTAM, but noted on spilve.org).

Fees for 1.4 t (cash only):
Landing 20 EUR
Parking 5 EUR/day

Civil Airfield Blexen (EDWT)

by Elmar2019-05-27 00:00:00 UTC

Flew into Blexen several times as part of the Niedersachsenrallye.

As previously described, for powered flight the north traffic pattern (800 ft) is preferred; the approach to Runway 27 leads over water with a nice view past the Bremerhaven shoreline. An approach from the south over the Weser is also no problem. On departure from Runway 27, if possible, turn early to approx. HDG 300 (see also wlv-blexen.de). In a northerly wind, expect turbulence behind the dike!

Warm and helpful welcome at the field. Despite busy traffic, the flight operations were professional, low-key, and relaxed. The field is PPR; especially on summer weekends it seems unproblematic; they are happy to have visitors.

No fuel. We did not use the ferry to Bremerhaven this time.

Because of the beautiful location behind the dike and the friendly atmosphere, definitely worth a visit!

The airfield operates “special operations” during the winter season, but PPR was approved at short notice for evenings via email. Given the operating hours of other fields in the area, that alone is very helpful. Very scenic approach!

Runway and apron, as already mentioned, quite rough, but no problem with careful taxiing. The airfield is overall rustic with the old buildings and bunkers—but that is exactly what gives it its charm in my view and makes it worth a trip in its own right.

Bicycles and electric cars are available for rent right at the field; reserving by phone is recommended.

Fees 1.2 t:
Landing 9 EUR
PPR fee 4.50 EUR
Parking/night 8.50 EUR

Airport Deauville Normandie (LFRG)

by Elmar2018-08-14 00:00:00 UTC

Deauville Normandie – currently still no PPR, even for Customs.

Straightforward vectors to the ILS; for a short stay, parking on asphalt is possible. The Customs office is signposted; processing is quick. AVGAS by truck, after airliners and jets have been handled—we waited about 1.5 hours. Payment then again at the C office, where a Customs officer who happened to be present insisted on recording all data again for our onward flight to Germany ("We check everything here").

Conclusion: well equipped, inexpensive, and one of the few airfields with Customs without PPR; however, plan for fuel wait time!

Fees PA28:
Landing 12.50 EUR

Airport Guernsey (EGJB)

by Elmar2018-08-14 00:00:00 UTC

Everything as previously described. No PPR; nevertheless we requested parking in advance by e-mail and received a quick positive reply.

IFR approach with vectors to the ILS from Guernsey Approach. Parking with ASG on the West Apron. Departure then on an omnidirectional departure along the south coast. When leaving the Channel Island CTR, the small peculiarities of UK ATC show up: "radar control terminated, squawk 7000, bye". The French integrate you back into the system again.

The island itself, as described, is a dream. You can also return Hertz cars at ASG; after prior contact they can, if necessary, also be delivered directly there (Hertz has no location at the airport, so the arrival time should be reasonably accurate). Buses also run from practically every corner. A very good Italian restaurant is Rosso in St. Peter Port with a view over the harbor (reserve!).

Fees:
Landing 26 GBP
Handling ASG 10 GBP
Parking 15 GBP/day
AVGAS via ASG 1.17 GBP
Payment by card +2.5%

Airport Sylt (EDXW)

by Elmar2018-04-02 00:00:00 UTC

Everything about Sylt has basically been said—friendly staff at the GAT, customs automatically notified for entry from Norway, gorgeous approach.

However: When asked, it seems the charm offensive is over; IFR approach and 1 night of parking for a C182 comes to a bit over 107 EUR. Part of the fees appears to be triggered by the I-Plan. Compared with other airfields of similar size, that seems a bit much.

We arrived at Odense VFR “self-service” in the evening after aerodrome closure, so we called ahead to coordinate parking and leaving the premises. No problem at all: after landing, enter your details on a list located in the white hut by the fuel station. You can leave the premises at any time via a turnstile; however, you can only get back in once the field opens again. Pilot-controlled lighting was also offered to us. How wonderfully uncomplicated flying in Denmark always is!

Refueling, however, is considerably more complicated if you don’t have a BP card. It took two airfield staff to get the pump running. No credit card surcharge was charged.

Fees: landing and 24 hours parking approx. EUR 26 (<1.2 t).

Civil Airfield Endelave (EKEL)

by Elmar2017-08-03 00:00:00 UTC

Truly a wonderfully idyllic and well-maintained airfield! The flight plan can be closed via FIS. After landing we were given a tour by Jens Toft. The family is happy when the airfield is used.
To get to the beach, go past the building with the bicycles, left after a few meters and then right again—we were the only ones far and wide!

If you don’t want to camp at the airfield, you should arrange a room early—there are only a handful of guesthouses on the island. We stayed at Endelave Kro, about 90 EUR for a fairly simple room. There is no bank/ATM/etc. on Endelave, but many shops accept cards.

Absolutely recommended for a relaxed (short) vacation!

Civil Airfield Oban (EGEO)

by Elmar2017-07-02 00:00:00 UTC

As previously mentioned, EGEO is a good starting point for Scotland/the Hebrides, but we really liked the town of Oban itself! The scenery is stunning, and there is good food e.g. by the water/pier near the tourist information. Rental car was hassle-free with FLIT Self Drive. A bus runs from the airfield into town; otherwise a taxi is about 15 GBP.

As usual at airfields in the UK, be sure to call briefly in advance for PPR; don’t forget high-vis jackets. For fuel you should apparently call ahead as well; in our case, Paul Keegan wandered by anyway and then fetched the truck (“we are hardly Heathrow”).

Approach entirely straightforward. Scottish Control and Information both very helpful (current weather via Scottish FIS; they also called the airfield again with the exact ETA before handover).

In the area the weather often seems rather “bad,” so you should definitely consider the option of flying IFR in Class G airspace.

Fees:
Landing: 20 GBP up to 1.5 t
Parking (3 days) was not charged

Civil Airfield Caernarfon (EGCK)

by Elmar2017-06-29 00:00:00 UTC

Used the airfield as a stopover en route to/from Scotland. Caernarfon itself is well worth seeing and deserves a visit!

Caernarfon is in the Valley AIAA, so on weekdays approach with contact to Valley Radar. In the north/Menai Strait the military request a maximum altitude of 1500 ft; to the south, climbing/descending through the AIAA with coordination was straightforward.

Approach at the field was completely straightforward with no specific requirements. Runway 20/02 is “unlicensed” due to the wind turbines and officially usable only after a bureaucratic process; however, we were able to use 20 with a decent headwind without any paperwork.

The staff at the airfield are extremely helpful, friendly, and efficient—about 25 min from landing to getting into the taxi, including refueling, hangaring, and paying!

Fees:
Landing SEP 15 GBP
Hangar 25 GBP/day
Taxi into town: 18 - 25 GBP

Airport Newquay (EGHQ)

by Elmar2017-06-19 00:00:00 UTC

"Which Approach do you require?" - Newquay Cornwall Airport is, also thanks to IFR procedures in uncontrolled airspace, a good and straightforward base to explore Cornwall!

As is usual at British aerodromes, a PPR call is mandatory. For light GA this is handled via the Flynqy flight school (phone number e.g. on their webpage; landing in summer possible until 1830 local, otherwise higher fees). The extremely friendly staff of the flight school also take care of fueling and booking out with ATC for departure.

Car rental providers are available in the main terminal, but often only with a reservation and limited opening hours. Other providers in town, e.g., Europcar.

Fees up to 2 t:
Landing 25 GBP;
Parking 4.80 GBP.

Airport Niederrhein (EDLV)

by Elmar2017-05-17 00:00:00 UTC

Trouble-free IFR approach with vectors to the ILS, short landing ‘if possible’ and direct vacate via Charlie. Follow Me from Solid Handling is dispatched automatically; we were parked opposite Charlie. Handling takes care of everything professionally and courteously; you can also settle the bill in the lounge over a coffee.

Cost for picking up a passenger during the day around EUR 37 (up to 1500 kg MTOW) – quite reasonable given the perfect service.

Civil Airfield Texel (EHTX)

by Elmar2017-05-17 00:00:00 UTC

Straightforward approach, possibly also unusually low beneath Schiphol Class A and then through the corridor. The runway is perfectly flat, and the on-field service is excellent. Bicycles can be rented from the operators; a hangar space was still available. Everyone, as has already been described several times, is extremely helpful. Only the fees are, typical for the Netherlands, rather on the high side (can be found on the website)—still an ideal destination!

Civil Airfield Wyk Auf Foehr (EDXY)

by Elmar2017-04-06 00:00:00 UTC

Early April 2017, everything still as previously described: friendly reception, straightforward and pleasant approach, and well-maintained RWYs.
The flight information officer was extremely helpful and entertaining, with weather and tips for accommodation.
Would gladly come again!
