Pilot Comments for EDRY

IFR operations finally started on 19 Dec 2025 (RNP to both runway ends). An IFR approach generally does not require PPR; just make sure AFIS is in operation (check NOTAMs!). However, there is still no official MET report and no ATIS. The approaches have no major peculiarities, except that the minima are high (because the runway is not qualified as an instrument runway). In principle, an “approach fee” familiar from most German AFIS fields is charged per approach, about 40 euros. But if you cancel IFR before the FAF and the handover to Speyer (which requires a ceiling of at least 3,000 ft), it does not apply. This is especially useful if you only want to perform a low approach, i.e., not land, because the approach fee cannot yet be paid via aerops. Therefore, in that case it’s best to send your billing details to the aerodrome by email in advance. Departures are still VFR only; in simple terms they therefore still require 1,500 m visibility and a 500 ft ceiling. SIDs are reportedly planned in the future, after which IFR departures will be possible.

The standout feature of this airfield is its close proximity to the attractive city center with its cathedral and the technology museum. Both are within easy walking distance.
The airfield itself is huge and a bit impersonal, with long walks between the tower/fuel station and the parking area/restaurant. The restaurant with a terrace at the north end of the field is quite OK.
The fuel station is self-service and not very intuitive; I wasn’t the only one puzzling over it. In fact it’s simple: taxi up — open the cap — remove the nozzle and hose — refuel; the quantity is shown on the pump display — return the nozzle and hose — pay at the tower (cash or card). Very friendly and professional tower operator.
It would get a fifth star if MOGAS were available.

Speyer (EDRY) is a well-equipped, GA-friendly airfield with a 1677 m runway, VFR operations, and runway lighting. The airport is known for its professional, welcoming staff and efficient service. The airfield is adjacent to the Technik Museum and within 7–15 minutes’ walk of Speyer’s city center and cathedral. Parking is available on both the tower side and a grass area in the northwestern corner; parking on the grass side offers quick access to the museum, Bistro Meridian, and Hotel Technik. There are two access gates from the grass parking area: one leads directly to the road behind the hangars, the other into the garden of Bistro Meridian.
Landing fees are generally described as moderate for Germany, with lärmgestaffelt (noise-based) pricing. Example: landing and one night parking about €40. Another example: landing plus three days’ parking about €40. Fees can be paid by card or via AeroPS; a self-service payment terminal is available at the tower, though direct payment to staff may be easier. Overnight parking is available; hangar space may be possible on request.
Fuel (Avgas, Jet A1) is available by self-service; some pilots find the system non-intuitive but staff provide helpful assistance if needed. At times, fuel pumps have been reported out of service—check ahead if planning a fuel stop.
Facilities include a pilot lounge, briefing room, snack/coffee vending machines in the terminal, and free loaner bicycles (collect locks from tower). E-scooters and app2drive rental cars are also available on site. The Bistro Meridian offers food and drink at reasonable prices; another restaurant (“Bordküche”) exists but direct access may require a detour due to current gate arrangements.
Customs clearance for flights from/to Switzerland or non-Schengen countries requires advance notice—typically 2 hours by phone or web form; no extra charge applies. For UK/Jersey arrivals, 24 hours’ notice by fax/email plus radio call 15 minutes before landing is required.
The airfield’s proximity to Speyer’s Technik Museum (with discounted entry for pilots), Sea Life Aquarium, city center, and Dom makes it popular for day trips or overnight stays. Taxis into town cost around €10 and take only a few minutes; hotels such as Domhof or Hotel Technik are within easy reach.
Noise abatement procedures must be observed; avoid overflying the nearby refinery. Circuit patterns may be tight due to city proximity. On weekends there can be significant parachute activity—aircraft continue operations while jumpers are in the air but caution is advised.
Some taxiways may become flooded after heavy rain—check NOTAMs before arrival. Access between apron areas and exits may involve detours due to security gates; signage is present but some gates require remote opening by tower staff.
Overall, EDRY offers excellent service, good facilities, convenient access to local attractions, and moderate fees for non-commercial GA pilots. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for operational details.
