Pilot Comments for ESSV
Timo
Great airfield. My PPR request (landing outside opening hours) was answered promptly. IFR arrival and departure were trouble-free, and the controllers were very supportive. Otherwise, everything as previously mentioned. Uber to "DownTown" about €30.

Important: There is permanently no 100LL available in Visby (and thus anywhere on Gotland). The former 100LL pump has been replaced with Hjelmco 91/96 (likely at the aeroclub’s initiative, as they no longer need 100LL). Around the club there seems to be very little traffic even in good weather. Otherwise still good; you can usually choose the runway (we landed RWY 21 and could essentially roll the rest of the way to the Aeroclub Apron Bravo; parking on the main apron would require prior notification to the airport). Taxiways, the grass runway, and Apron Bravo are well maintained. Landing fees (incl. 1 night parking) are typical for Swedavia at about €80; the invoice comes later. Remember the door code when exiting (Aeroclub). Getting a taxi to town can be somewhat difficult at times. Visby remains well worth a visit and charming. Great seafood (fantastic mussels) at the restaurant "Bakfickan" (only a few seats). Overall price level in town is fine. Solid, large hotel: Best Western Strand.

Visby (ESSV) is a popular and welcoming destination for general aviation, offering straightforward VFR and IFR operations with ATC familiar with light GA traffic. A flight plan is required for all arrivals and departures due to the island’s location surrounded by international airspace. Visual approaches and departures are common, with grass runways 28/10 frequently used for GA; the grass surfaces are well maintained and suitable even after rain, though can be bumpy in windy conditions. Parking for GA is typically on apron B (grass) near the flying club, accessed via a long asphalt taxiway; apron A (tarmac) is reserved for fueling or short stays with PPR. The main terminal is about 2–2.5 km from the GA apron, while the city center is 2–4 km away; walking to town takes about 20–30 minutes, though taxis are available but may require waiting or advance booking.
Fuel availability has changed: 100LL is no longer available, replaced by Hjelmco 91/96 UL at the flying club area. Refueling is not self-service; request fueling via the tower and someone will activate the pump for you. Jet A1 is available via fuel truck on apron A, with a hookup fee of 600 SEK. Payment for landing and parking fees cannot be made on site; invoices are sent later by the flying club or airport operator. Example: landing and one night parking about €70.
Facilities at the flying club include basic overnight accommodation (described as rustic), toilets (accessed via code), and bike rental; there are no briefing rooms or showers at the club itself. The airport restaurant operates only on weekdays from 9 to 15, but Visby offers a wide range of dining options within easy reach. Car hire is available at the main terminal or nearby petrol station (Circle K Visby Broväg). Taxis to town cost around 120–165 SEK.
Access to and from the airside GA area requires a code for a locked gate—make sure to note this before leaving, as re-entry without it can be difficult if no staff are present. For departures, startup clearance must be requested from ATC.
Visby’s medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and highly recommended for visitors. The airport and flying club staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, making ESSV an attractive stop for non-commercial GA flights.
