What other pilots say about EKRN
Absolutely pragmatic procedures for an airport of this size (Spanish airport managers should come take a look). Pilots use the briefing room in the small terminal building to pay their (modest: 13 EUR for PA28) fees by self-service using a credit card terminal. When re-entering airside upon departure, you present your license and the payment receipt to a camera and the tower staff will let you in. Just be aware of insane AVGAS prices (ca. 6 EUR/liter last time I checked). Landside, it's most convenient to get a rental car upon prior reservation from one of the agents. Don't expect to walk up to the counter without a reservation, as they are often unmanned. Rental cars are on the expensive side, however in our cases so far wo get nice and tidy cars. There is a but network, but I don't usually find the timings frequent and convenient enough for day trips with some flexibility. If you just want to go go Ronne, both walking (about an hour) or a bus would be fine.
Bornholm (EKRN) is a GA-friendly airport with straightforward procedures and well-maintained facilities. Both VFR and IFR operations are supported, with ILS and RNAV approaches to both runways. There are no STARs or SIDs; departures proceed direct to the first waypoint, but noise abatement restrictions apply—see the 10-9 plate for details. ATC is described as clear and helpful, though there is no radar vectoring.
GA parking is exclusively on a large, stable grass apron. Access to and from the apron is via a dedicated GA gate equipped with a camera; pilots must present their license, ID, and payment receipt for entry/exit. All ground handling is self-service: after arrival, proceed to the self-briefing room in the terminal, call the tower using the provided phone, receive an invoice printed locally, and pay by credit or debit card at the terminal. Example: landing fee about €10; combined landing and parking for 1–2 nights typically ranges from about €10 to €20.
Fuel (100LL/Avgas) is available but payment methods are restricted: some pumps require a Shell Air card only (no cash or credit/debit cards), while others accept cash (DKK or EUR) or Statoil card at Baltic Air Services. Fuel prices are consistently described as high. Jet-A1 is available from Bornholm Air Service.
Car rental agencies (Europcar, Avis) operate on site with good opening hours; advance booking is recommended due to limited availability at peak times. Buses depart directly from the terminal to Rønne and other island destinations; taxis can be ordered via a free phone in arrivals. Walking to Rønne takes about 45–60 minutes; cycling is possible, with bikes rentable on site or nearby.
Facilities include a self-briefing room with internet access (no free WiFi), an ATM in the terminal, and maintenance services available through local companies such as Baltic Air Services and bornholm.aero. No tie-downs are provided on the grass apron; pilots should bring their own securing equipment if strong winds are forecast.
Customs/immigration procedures are minimal for intra-Schengen flights but may be required for arrivals from outside Schengen—see AIP/NOTAM for details.
Bornholm offers relaxed operations, efficient self-service processes, and easy access to local transport options, making it well-suited for non-commercial GA flights.
