Beautiful airfield situated on a ridge. Straightforward approach to the unfortunately somewhat bumpy runway 24, and a departure that’s spectacular for “flatland pilots,” climbing out over the valley and the village beyond the runway end—like launching off an aircraft carrier. MOGAS and AVGAS available self-service; pick up the key for the fuel station from the AFISO beforehand. The restaurant is rightly praised for its grill specialty! After the meal, a recalculation of Weight & Balance may be advisable. Great airfield—highly recommended!
Visited yesterday with a SuperDimona. The runway has pronounced undulations. The meat (Sierra and Romeo, preordered via radio), grilled over an open fire, was excellent and worth its price. The garden, the sanitary facilities, and more have been refurbished and make a very good impression. Landing fee €5. Unfortunately, one star deducted due to the runway condition.
EDRG features a 650-meter grass runway that is generally bumpy, with some gravel areas; taxi slowly and expect uneven surfaces, especially on the runway and taxiways. The airfield is not suited for IFR operations.
A well-known on-field restaurant specializes in grilled meats, with signature dishes such as "Sierra" (Schweinekamm), "Lima" (Schweinelende), "Romeo" (Roastbeef), and "Foxtrott" (Rinderfilet); meals can be ordered by radio during arrival. Food quality is consistently praised, though prices for certain dishes are considered high. Example: Rinderfilet about €40. Service can be slow when busy.
Landing fees are moderate. Example: landing fee about €10. Fuel (Mogas and Avgas) is available via self-service; obtain the key from the flight supervisor.
Facilities include renovated restrooms and a garden area. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with helpful staff. The airfield is located on a ridge with scenic views; Idar-Oberstein town is about four kilometers away, typically requiring a taxi for access.
Strict adherence to circuit procedures is expected; noise abatement may be monitored by local residents. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM. EDRG offers a welcoming stop for non-commercial general aviation pilots seeking a culinary destination with unique character.
