Pilot Comments for EDQA
Eckard
Landed at Bamberg on Sunday in a DR400. Right-hand traffic pattern, very extended, for landing runway 21. Parked on the grass parking area to the right of the taxiway. Almost everything here seems to have been newly built in recent years. Operations building with an Italian restaurant (tasty) and a tower, four large hangars—everything top-notch. A large regional automotive supplier apparently helped make everything new and spacious. Friendly AFIS officer and standard landing fees (just under €12) make a return visit to the airfield close to Bamberg likely. When the weather cooperates, the club on the field is active and PPR is no problem.
Achim
Excellent infrastructure thanks to the influence of the Brose company, no comparison to the previous US Army setup. PPR is more of a formality.
The restaurant looks stylish but unfortunately serves only the usual bratwurst/currywurst grub.

Strictly PPR, especially on weekdays; requests are typically handled via the website and confirmed by email or phone, with a flugleiter/AFIS arranged as needed. IFR procedures (RNP) are published but not available for general PPL use; practical access is VFR. The airfield is club-run, friendly, and generally well-organized, though operationally busy with glider activity and occasional commercial flights. No parallel taxiway exists; backtracking is standard, and runup is best done on the parking position. Circuit discipline can be challenging due to mixed glider/motor traffic; adherence to noise-sensitive circuit routing per VAC is expected.
Fees are moderate to high depending on services and duration. Landegebühr examples: about €20 for typical SEP, about €10–€20 for smaller types; PPR fee about €15 per movement; overnight outdoor parking can add €10–€25 per night, sometimes counted as two days for a single night. Example: landing, PPR, and parking together about €55–€60. Short stays under four hours may avoid parking fees in some cases.
Facilities include a modern terminal with briefing room and an Italian restaurant offering quality food. Avgas, Jet A1, and Mogas are available but Avgas is considered expensive. Hangar space is sometimes available by arrangement. Free bicycles are provided for visitors; the city center is 17–20 minutes by bike or 7–20 minutes on foot depending on route. Bus connections require a 10–20 minute walk to the nearest stop; taxi rides to the city cost around €10–€18.
Runway and taxiways are in very good condition; grass parking areas can be rough but usable. No customs available for direct international arrivals except occasionally from Switzerland with prior arrangement; otherwise use another airport for customs clearance.
Overall, EDQA offers reliable GA access to Bamberg with good service and infrastructure, though procedures require advance coordination and fees can accumulate with extended stays or multiple services.
