Pilot Comments for EDDN

Last update 2015-08-18: Tower & GAT very friendly. Drinks vending machine reasonably priced.
980kg MTOW, 1x IFR approach + LDG, 31,75€
Klaus
At EDDN today (IFR). No slot or PPR required. Everyone very friendly. Landing fee incl. GAT fee for a twin-engine Cessna 414 (MTOW 2880kg), taxes included: 113,20 €. AVGAS paid with AirBP card. Fuel truck comes to the aircraft.

I had to PPR this arrival due to airport construction works as per the NOTAM
"E) PPR FOR ALL GENERAL AVIATION FLIGHTS, EXC LOCAL BASED ACFT. FOR PERMISSION CTC +49(0)9119371322 72H IN ADVANCE OF ETA."
The ramp was empty, and I didn't notice any works. Anyway GAT efficient as ever, taxi ordered for when I had secured the aircraft so a quick departure to Erlangen for the annual Bergkerweich. 72.61 EUR including emission charges, credit fees and VA.

Overall, everything OK. Staff from Tower and apron to the GAT all super friendly and impeccable; nothing to complain about. Arrival and departure completely straightforward and easy. The connection to public transport is also excellent: at the terminal (250 m from the GAT) the metro runs every 10 minutes directly to the main station (Hbf; 13 min travel time). Car rentals etc. are also available in the terminal.
The downside, as usual, is the fees (as of 12/2025): with 1,335 kg MTOW and 3.5 hours of parking you very quickly end up in the three-digit range all-in. The issue is not the landing fee, but the number of invoice line items and the fact that some of them at the GAT appear to be partly made up. The landing fee (in Nürnberg it is called "Startgebühr") is a reasonable €18.70; on top of that there is parking (€9.28) and the emissions charge (€3.12), which follow from the schedule of charges and are perfectly fine. However, there is also a GAT fee of €26.45, the consideration for which is unclear to me. Adding VAT, you are already at €68.48. If you want to pay that by card (Visa/Master), you get hit with an additional 4% card payment surcharge, which, like the GAT fee mentioned, does not appear in the schedule of charges. If you then add the outstanding DFS fee, which is invoiced separately, you very quickly break the €100 mark, which, overall, seems clearly excessive.

Great experience. Professional on the radio during the approach, then Follow Me to the GA apron. On request the Follow Me can take you to the main terminal; from there you walk past the baggage carousels straight to the U-Bahn in front of the building. It runs every 10 minutes and you’re in the city center in under 15 minutes. Accommodation at CloudOne was excellent, with a city view at breakfast or in the bar. Be sure to note the GAT opening hours (much shorter on weekends), otherwise significantly higher fees may be charged. In my case they apparently turned a blind eye and charged the standard rates. If the GAT is closed, after coordination with Ops the gate guard will let you in via Gate 1 (to the right of the main terminal building) and, after security screening, you’ll be driven to the GA apron:

Nürnberg (EDDN) is a large international airport with a dedicated General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and consistently friendly, efficient service for non-commercial GA. Both VFR and IFR operations are straightforward, with no PPR or slot required under normal circumstances; however, during construction or special events, PPR may be required for all GA flights—see AIP/NOTAM. Handling is not compulsory in all cases, but most GA traffic uses the GAT. Follow-me cars guide arrivals to parking, and GAT staff provide quick assistance with fueling, paperwork, and transport on the apron.
Fees for landing, handling, parking, and related services vary. For typical single or twin-engine aircraft up to 2 tonnes MTOW, total charges for landing plus one night of parking generally range from about €50 to €70. Example: landing, handling, and overnight parking about €60; another example: two nights parking with handling about €70. Some reports note higher charges when additional services such as hangarage or extended handling are used; in rare cases with hangarage and multiple surcharges, totals can exceed €200. Credit card payments may incur additional fees.
Facilities at the GAT include a briefing room, pilot lounge, vending machines for drinks and snacks, toilets, and flight planning resources. Refueling is prompt; AirBP cards are accepted. The Mövenpick hotel is within walking distance of the terminal.
Ground access is excellent: the U-Bahn (U2) station is directly at the airport terminal or a short walk from the GAT (3–15 minutes reported), providing direct access to Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof in 10–15 minutes. Taxis to city center cost about €15–20 and take 12–15 minutes.
Customs and immigration are available on request; non-Schengen arrivals may require transfer to the main terminal for passport control. The GAT team coordinates these procedures efficiently.
Controllers are described as professional and accommodating to GA needs. Occasional vectoring high on approach or short waits for follow-me cars may occur during busy periods or construction works. Document checks (licence, medical, insurance) are routine—ensure all documents are available.
Nürnberg offers a welcoming environment for general aviation with efficient service, good facilities, and excellent city access. Fees are moderate for an airport of this size but can be higher if extra services are used. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
