Landed yesterday, on the last day of the winter closure. Prior to arrival, obtained permission by phone and asked about parking for visiting aircraft; everything was explained courteously. The approach takes some getting used to, as you have to fly very low along the trees. The grass runway was in good condition, with over 600 m length. Reception at the C-Büro was extremely friendly, and the landing fee of CHF 20 for a Piper Cadet (MTOM 1055kg) was reasonable.

Buttwil (LSZU) is an attractive airfield situated on a hillside, known for its scenic location and friendly, helpful staff. The airfield operates without PPR except during winter (1 October to 1 April), when prior permission is required. Customs are available with advance arrangement, typically via the website form and a phone call at least two hours before arrival. The field has two circuits, with runway 34 in use most of the time; both left- and right-hand circuits are flown simultaneously by powered aircraft, and long finals are also common. The approach to runway 34 requires careful technique due to trees near the threshold and a short available landing distance of 495 m; the displaced threshold is not marked. The circuit can be busy with helicopters, gliders, parachuting, and nearby model flying, especially on weekends.

The grass runway condition varies: some reports note it as well maintained and well drained, while others mention it can be rough or less optimal at times; caution is advised on the grass taxiway, while asphalt taxiways and parking are in excellent condition. Fuel (Avgas, Mogas, JetA1) is available on request (PPR). Parking is organized; overnight parking is possible.

The on-field restaurant offers good food and a pleasant atmosphere but has variable opening hours. Walking routes and hiking opportunities start from the airfield, with access to the village for bus connections.

The A/A frequency is shared with Bex (LSGB), so clear use of airfield names in radio calls is important to avoid confusion. Most flight service staff speak German; English may not always be understood.

Example: landing fee about CHF 20; overnight parking about CHF 12; customs about CHF 20 per movement.
