Pilot Comments for LFSB

Basel is an interesting place to fly into, not complex but has some terrain nearby so a good briefing of the charts is required. The airport is also fairly busy and a good brief is probably recommended. It's interesting to note whilst it's a coordinated airport, this is on the basis of using the main terminal, so for small GA I was informed a SLOT is not required. You must submit a GENDEC via the GAC BASEL website before arrival and before departure, but don't expect to be met on arrival. Before departure though you must show your passport and license to the box at the edge of the red line before start-up. The bills for fuel, landing come a long time after the Invoice for Handling/Overnight stay and come separately from the Airport and it means using the intl bank transfer and that comes at an additional cost. It's not cheap, but it's an easy way into Basel.

Basel Mulhouse (LFSB) is a busy, binational airport with both Swiss and French sides. General aviation handling for non-based aircraft is mandatory and typically coordinated through GAC Basel AG (gacbasel.ch), which operates in the Swiss sector. Handling is described as friendly and efficient, with all payments processed via GAC; invoices for landing, parking, and handling are sent separately, often after the visit, and payment is by bank transfer. For VFR flights to or from Switzerland or France using GAC, no flight plan is required; otherwise, standard airport rules apply. No separate PPR from the airport is needed if GAC approves the request; IFR non-commercial arrivals generally do not require PPR but confirming parking availability in advance is advised.
Fees are high compared to other GA airports. Example: handling about CHF 150, parking per night about CHF 100 plus 8.1% VAT; landing fee about CHF 50. Additional charges may apply for transport between aircraft and terminal (about CHF 30 one way). All fees are billed separately by different entities. Example: total charges for two nights with handling and parking can reach around CHF 380, excluding landing fees.
ATC is friendly but often uses heavily accented English; expect busy frequencies and possible holding during peak airline traffic. Aircraft under 5.7t MTOW use a displaced threshold due to tight VFR circuit constraints and close airliner sequencing; high-speed approaches may be requested. The airport operates from 0600LT to 2200LT.
On arrival at the GAC area (Swiss side), escorted access is required to leave or re-enter the airside area without an airport badge; staff are available to assist. Before departure, a brief registration with security is required. For flights arriving from or departing to outside Switzerland via GAC, customs notification must be submitted via web form at least one hour before ETA or ETD.
Ground transport options include a direct bus to Basel city (main station) taking about 10–15 minutes; walking routes from the GAC area are circuitous (Swiss sector: about 30 minutes on foot), so taxi or shuttle use should be expected. Rental cars are available at the terminal.
Facilities include basic GA services through GAC; coffee is sometimes offered at the flight school within the GAC area. Fueling is available but may involve delays and separate invoicing.
Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for current details. The airport's organization for GA can be confusing, signage is limited, and processes may require patience—especially when interacting with security or customs staff unfamiliar with GA procedures.
Overall, LFSB offers reliable access to Basel but at high cost and with some procedural complexity for non-commercial general aviation pilots.
