What other pilots say about LFOD
One of the great advantages that Saumur St Floriet airfield has, over most others, is that there is an excellent hotel only 5 minutes’ walk from the runway. I can highly recommend it.
Hôtel les Terrasses de Saumur*** (formerly Hôtel Clos de Bénédictines) is a wonderful Logis de France, with its own pool and terrace overlooking Saumur itself. Having dinner or breakfast there is one of life’s great pleasures.
The hotel not only has a gourmet restaurant, but there are also chalets and duplex apartments available in the ground. The perfect place to relax and recover after that flight you have just made; be it for a night or longer. (Note: Room 14 is rather on the small size.)
The French National Horse-Riding School – one of the great attractions of Saumur – is within walking distance.
Fly Overs: Saumur is the ideal base to overfly The Châteaux of the Loire. This page gives their details and Coordinates: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teaux_of_the_Loire_Valley
LFOD (Saumur) operates VFR only, with no instrument approaches and radio calls in French. The airfield features a large runway and is suitable for general aviation, including ultralights. Parachuting activity is common, especially in the mornings, with the parachute center located on the south side of the runway and main facilities to the north. The Fontevraud Restricted Area lies east of the field, used for military exercises, and the Chinon Nuclear station is further east; both are clearly marked on charts.
Fuel (Avgas and Jet) is available by card payment, but successful self-service depends on the presence of an aero club member; card payment at the pump may be unreliable. Parking is available; Example: parking about €10 for two days. Landing fees are sometimes not collected if the clubhouse is closed; Example: landing fee about €10 when staffed.
Accommodation options include Hôtel les Terrasses de Saumur, a hotel with restaurant and pool about 5 minutes’ walk from the airfield, as well as other hotels in Saumur. The town center is accessible by taxi in about 10 minutes or on foot in around one hour. Car rental through Hertz is possible near the train station or via local arrangements at the airfield. Cycling along the Loire is popular, and local attractions include Saumur Castle and the French National Horse-Riding School within walking distance.
Taxi rides to town cost around €30. Facilities such as fuel payment may require some patience if unattended. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
