Pilot Comments for LEAX
Philipp
Practically the only GA-usable airfield along the entire Andalusian Mediterranean coast. It is apparently pronounced roughly like "La Ascharkia". Unfortunately, it remains a somewhat peculiar and not very welcoming airfield. On the Aeroclub de Malaga website there is a 59(!)-page briefing document. They did make an effort by translating it completely into English, but content-wise it is a disaster. It also states two essential points: - firstly, the airfield is PPR for all visitors - secondly, it essentially says that crews who cannot use Spanish on the radio must ensure there is a person on the ground to handle the radio and thus ensure integration into the aerodrome traffic.
So there is a double reason why you need an approved PPR to land there (reportedly, some local pilots, possibly even instructors, really insist that only Spanish be used on the radio).
We tried (admittedly on fairly short notice) by email and by phone with the Aeroclub; there was absolutely no response whatsoever. So the field remained closed to us and we did not fly there. Flight prevented by inflexible PPR rules! Of course, we could have simply flown there, played the clueless Germans and accepted the inevitable "shitstorm", but that isn’t great either.
So: on site things may usually end up friendly and pleasant, but the PPR requirement is basically a nuisance.

LEAX is suitable for flights to Andalusia, with arrival possible until 21:00 local time after prior phone coordination. Spanish is used on the radio; basic Spanish phraseology for position and intentions is helpful, as English is not always spoken on site. Landing fees are low. Example: landing about €10. Parking incurs a daily fee; longer stays may become less economical compared to alternatives. Fuel is available, but morning refueling can be delayed due to flight school activity. Car hire can be arranged with delivery to the airfield, and taxis provide practical access to the city at reasonable rates. Maintenance is available on site, though support may be limited for non-club aircraft; an FAA A&P mechanic associated with the aeroclub can assist if needed. The airfield sits on a hillside, and wind conditions can vary significantly along the runway, especially on approach to runway 13 from the mountains, which requires a steep descent rate. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
