Pilot Comments for GCRR
Timo
Basically a straightforward aerodrome. Unfortunately only 4 GA parking positions, which cannot be reserved. So it’s essentially first come, first served. I tried for weeks to obtain an IFR slot. It has to be done via GCR Request. After at least 20 attempts with various corrections/adjustments, I gave up and flew in VFR. Outbound I still went IFR, no issues. I’m convinced this whole slot situation is meant to steer pilots toward handling agents. Pricing: for a PA46 for 3 nights / 2 crew and 2 pax: 52 EUR; AVGAS at 2.82 EUR per liter. Very fair. According to Operations, handling will be mandatory from August 2024. 3 stars because of the slot issue.

Lanzarote (GCRR) offers limited general aviation parking, typically 3–4 stands, which cannot be reserved. Availability is first come, first served; if GA parking is full, parking on the commercial apron requires handling. Handling is not generally mandatory but may become obligatory from August 2024. IFR slots are required and must be requested via GCR Request; obtaining them can be challenging, and pilots may be encouraged toward handling agents due to slot difficulties. VFR arrivals are straightforward, and outbound IFR is possible without issue.
Avgas is available (cash payment required), with Lanzarote being one of the few Canary Islands airports offering it. Fuel prices are lower than in continental Spain. Example: landing and overnight parking about €50; another example: landing and three nights’ parking about €60. Fees are paid online via AENA’s portal or in person at the terminal (typically first floor). Self-handling is possible but can be complex without local knowledge.
The airport has a General Aviation Terminal (GAT) near customs, with passport control and security checks for arrivals and departures. Walking distance from GA parking to the terminal or GAT ranges from 10 to 45 minutes depending on location; if parked on the commercial apron, a handling agent’s vehicle may be needed for transfer. Car hire is available in Terminal 2.
Strong winds are common; aircraft should be securely tied down. For flights to Morocco, flight plans should be filed at least 24 hours in advance. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Lanzarote is considered a convenient entry point to the Canary Islands for non-commercial general aviation.
