What other pilots say about EKSS
Get in touch with Rune via SMS in advance, especially regarding bicycle rental. The new club building (aka "Terminal 3"), where you can sleep inside as a guest if needed, has been fully completed for some time. You need (if it isn’t already open) a code to get in, and codes for the bicycle locks as well—these come from Rune. The runway is fine, though not the best. It is still officially published as just under 700 meters, but in reality it’s more like 950 meters long. Landing fee 16 Euro (also for larger aircraft) is very reasonable; you can leave it in Euro. Bicycle 11 Euro. The 3 km path to Langør and the tranquility there are very nice. There’s a fish restaurant (right at the harbor) for food or drinks. There’s a bit more choice in Nordby (about 7 km from the airfield). Great secluded beach near Marup. Strong recommendation for a day on Samsø! Flight plan closure—as always in Denmark—is possible already during the approach with Kopenhagen FIS.
The grass runway is officially listed as just under 700 meters but is effectively closer to 950 meters, generally in good condition though not the best. Blind calls are standard for arrivals and departures. The airfield offers a new club building ("Terminal 3") where guests can sleep if needed, with access codes provided by the local contact Rune. Facilities include toilets, showers, kitchen, and seating areas; cleanliness varies but essentials are available. Camping under the wing is possible by arrangement.
Bicycles are available for hire at about €10 per day; access codes or unlocking assistance are provided by Rune or via +4586596222. The route to Langør (3 km) is scenic and quiet, with a fish restaurant at the harbor; Nordby (7–10 km) offers more dining and accommodation options. Beaches are accessible within 1–1.5 km or further afield near Marup and Nordby.
Landing fees are low; Example: landing about €20. Overnight parking has been charged separately in the past. Payment in euros is accepted, typically left in an envelope if no staff are present.
Wildlife such as deer may cross the runway unexpectedly, so caution is advised during takeoff and landing rolls. Flight plan closure can be handled during approach with Copenhagen FIS. For accommodation, local B&Bs such as Ballen Bed & Breakfast and Vadstrup1771 are recommended by pilots.
The airfield is well-suited for non-commercial general aviation visits focused on exploring Samsø by bicycle or on foot, with basic but functional facilities and a relaxed atmosphere.
