Civil Airfield Ameland (EHAL)

Ameland (EHAL) is a well-maintained grass airfield with a short, smooth runway, suitable for general aviation. The airfield operates between 09:30 and 18:00 local time, with possible extension to 19:00 on request. Prior notification by phone is generally requested, and in winter PPR applies. The circuit and approach are straightforward; minimum altitude over the Waddenzee is 1500 ft, and parachute activity can cause occasional delays. IFR departures are possible and handled smoothly with Dutch MIL; however, VFR flight plans cannot be filed via autorouter in the Netherlands—use official Homebriefing or call +31 20 4062315 for verification.

Landing fees are considered medium to high for the region. Example: landing and three hours parking about €60; weekday fees are slightly lower than weekends. Overnight parking incurs an additional charge, and a tourist tax of about €2 per person applies. Payment is accepted by card or cash.

Mogas, Avgas, and Jet A1 are available on site; self-service payment at the pump is possible. Tie-downs are provided, with securing points marked by white pylons. Free WiFi covers the airfield, including parking areas.

The airfield is located near Ballum village (400–700 meters or 5–7 minutes on foot), where bicycles—including e-bikes—can be rented at Nobel or similar outlets. The field itself offers two free bicycles for visitors. The wide sandy beach is about 2 km away, with good cycling infrastructure throughout the island. Accommodation options such as the Nobel Hotel are within walking distance.

A small café or kiosk is available on site for refreshments. Staff are described as friendly and helpful, with English widely spoken. Taxiways can be uneven in places; caution is advised when taxiing and near transitions from grass to paved surfaces.
