Pilot Comments for EGMC

Diverted into Southend as we arrived later than planned and Stapleford would have had no light for our arrival. Informed Southend ATC that we would need fuel, this was paid with AirBP card as at that time the OPS office was closed.
Also informed ATC to let UKBF that we would be diverting, whom attended the aircraft for our arrival. No issues and they had found our paperwork and diverted us to them which was really easy and no issues with the new system or process.
Travelled to London by train as was cheaper to stay at home and come and collect the aircraft the next day. Roughly 54 minutes to London Liverpool Street but last trains are relatively early at about midnight.

Arrival IFR from EDDR. After the handover to London Radar over the English Channel, direct Dover and then direct to Southend—kept within CAS at FL80 throughout. After shutdown on the apron, remember a hi-vis vest, then waited about 45 minutes for the fuel truck because the based Easyjet had a turnaround—€2.39 per liter for Avgas. Own entry and exit via the GAT in the former terminal building. Recommended Holiday Inn, and a train station to London (50 minutes) is at most a 5-minute walk away. Landing fee 24 GPB and parking 15 GPB per night for an AA5. Overall a recommended airport for London—you just need a bit of patience when the low-cost carriers come in.

Southend (EGMC) welcomes general aviation and offers both VFR and IFR access, with ILS approaches available at both runway ends. PPR is generally not required for non-training flights, but booking in by phone with ATC is standard, and PPR or notification may be needed during certain NOTAM periods or for training. Booking out before departure is required via phone to the tower, even if a flight plan is filed. For customs and immigration, submission of a GAR form in advance is necessary; border police may meet arrivals, and passports are required. Handling is not mandatory for aircraft up to 2–2.5 tonnes MTOW, and parking on the North Apron is typical with marshaller guidance.
Hi-vis vests are strictly required on the apron, and all pedestrian movement must follow marked green paths; crossing red lines or entering restricted areas leads to immediate security intervention. Payment of landing and parking fees is typically via Aerops app or QR code in the GA terminal; an example fee for overnight parking is about £20 per day, with another example showing a total overnight stay (landing plus parking) about £100. Facilities include a dedicated GA terminal with clear instructions posted inside, free WiFi in lounges, and nearby food options such as McDonald's and the Holiday Inn hotel—both within 5 minutes’ walk. The Holiday Inn offers rooms overlooking the apron and an on-site restaurant.
Fuel (Avgas/Jet A1) is available by bowser; self-service pumps require a BP card or are limited to based pilots, so visitors should request fuel via radio before arrival or after landing. Payment for fuel can be made with AirBP cards. Turnaround times are generally quick if pre-ordered, but delays may occur during airline operations.
Ground transport is convenient: the airport railway station is 5 minutes’ walk from GA parking, with direct trains to London Liverpool Street taking 45–54 minutes; last trains depart around midnight. Taxis are usually available outside the terminal. The Southend seafront and pier are accessible by taxi in about 15 minutes.
Southend operates 24 hours but restricts night movements between 22:00–08:00; airport building access may be limited outside core hours (doors locked after 20:30 local). ATC service is professional and helpful throughout. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for current details.
Overall, Southend provides efficient access to London for non-commercial GA with clear procedures, good facilities, and a welcoming attitude toward visiting pilots.
