Alderney (EGJA) offers a friendly, laid-back environment suitable for general aviation, with both VFR and IFR operations supported. The airport features an 880m tarmac runway (08/26) and two shorter grass strips; NDB and RNP approaches are available. Jersey Zone and Guernsey Approach provide radar vectors, and VFR arrivals typically use published entry points, though alternative routings may be accepted on request. PPR is required for VFR arrivals, arranged online via the Jersey website. The GAR (General Aviation Report) form is mandatory and can be submitted by email to alderney@gba.gov.gg; completing it before departure is recommended.
Parking is generally on grass, which is well maintained, but tarmac parking may be available when traffic is light. Free parking is available for up to three days. Two hangars exist—one airport-owned, one private—but availability details are limited. Hi-vis jackets are required airside. Avgas availability varies; recent reports conflict on whether fuel is currently offered, but Jet-A1 is not available for non-commercial users.
Landing fees are moderate. Example: landing about £10 for singles, £20 for twins; discounts may apply with fuel purchase. Accommodation on the island is limited and advance booking is advisable. The airport has a relaxed atmosphere with helpful staff.
The island can be explored easily by foot or bicycle; rental bikes are available in town or at the airport, with typical rates around £8 per person. Walking distance to St Anne’s town center is about 10 minutes. Car hire can be arranged in advance at the airport.
ATC service is friendly but procedures can be complex due to airspace structure (Class A/Special VFR), low-level water crossings (clearance typically not above 2000 ft), and proximity to French P-areas and nuclear power station ZRTs—strict adherence to published procedures and NOTAMs is essential. Yellow jackets are enforced on the apron.
Customs/immigration requires submission of the GAR form; procedures are straightforward when completed in advance.
Alderney provides a quiet destination with scenic coastal walks, sandy beaches, historical sites, and a relaxed pace ideal for a short GA visit. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
