Pilot Comments for EDTF

Uncontrolled "Radio" airport without AFIS but professional and friendly radio work. It was a busy saturday, lot's of traffic with different speeds (powered gliders, ultralights, echo class). Great view of the city from the traffic pattern. Good destination for a day/weekend trip. Visit the "Schlossberg" and old town, try local food and dip your feet into the Bächle.

Last Saturday we flew to Freiburg to drop off a package at the tower. We landed, handed over the package, and went to pay the landing fee: €46 for a Bonanza 36TC (1746 kg)!! I find that steep!! Closing the flight plan sets you back another €2. A nice field overall, but I think the prices are excessive.

Arrival from Switzerland. Customs pre-notification was handled expeditiously in advance by aerodrome operations. The aerodrome was easy to find, with a generous circuit. After landing, we were asked to park on the grass instead of the apron. The reception at the C-Büro was very friendly, and the landing fee for 630kg MTOM was very inexpensive (by Swiss standards).

EDTF offers a scenic approach over Freiburg, with friendly and professional tower staff. The airfield is suitable for non-commercial general aviation and features both grass and paved parking, though grass areas can be uneven. Landing fees vary significantly depending on weight, noise certification, and time of week; weekend surcharges apply. Example: landing about €60 with overnight parking. Lower fees are possible for lighter or quieter aircraft, but higher charges apply without noise certificates or on weekends.
Fuel is available but handled by FFH in a separate building; payment is not at the tower and may require extra steps. Payment for services can be made via Aerops, EC card, credit card, or cash. The on-field restaurant offers good food and service but has variable opening hours; check ahead if planning to eat on site.
Public transport access is excellent: a tram stop is within a short walk (3–15 minutes), with direct connections to the city center in 10–20 minutes. Bus stops are also nearby. Taxis and car rental (including app-based options like App2Drive) are available at the airfield.
Customs procedures require advance notice for both arriving and departing non-Schengen flights, contrary to some website information. Noise abatement is important; follow published circuit procedures due to city proximity and hospital helicopter traffic near runway 34 final. The airfield may close during football matches at the adjacent stadium—check official sources before planning flights.
Overall, EDTF provides efficient handling, good city access, and a memorable approach but expect higher landing fees than typical for similar airfields. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
