Pilot Comments for EDKL
Joachim
Flew into Köln Leverkusen for a business appointment. One of the first airfields to have consistently implemented flying without an operations manager. Request PPR via AeroPS, read the briefing regarding parking and run-up areas, fly in and coordinate with other traffic, and in the evening at the latest fill out the aerodrome main logbook form on the website and pay the landing fee via AeroPS. Perfect!

EDKL operates with PPR, which can be requested online or by phone; approval is typically quick and procedures are detailed on the official website. The airfield enforces a strict midday closure, and operations without an on-site manager are possible but require careful adherence to published procedures. During special events, arrivals may be restricted to certain aircraft categories with prior registration.
The grass runway is consistently described as well maintained and in excellent condition. The field offers Mogas, and all essential infrastructure is present. The on-field restaurant Fliegerhütte is regarded as inviting and of good quality, with a garden terrace and a varied menu.
Ground access to Leverkusen Chempark station is possible via a 700-meter walk around the northern end of the runway, taking about 18 minutes; alternative routes by road take about 30 minutes or a short taxi ride. S-Bahn S6 connects to Köln Hauptbahnhof in 16 minutes (every 20–30 minutes) and to Düsseldorf in 34 minutes.
Noise abatement procedures are important: approaches to runway 15 should be flown high and quiet due to sensitive residential areas north of the field; departures from runway 33 should turn west over the railway line as soon as safely possible. Glider activity and the midday closure require attention.
Fees are generally low. Example: landing fee about €10. Parking fees have been quoted at €3 per night in past reports. In cases of technical issues or emergencies, fees may be waived at the operator’s discretion.
Overall, EDKL is suitable for general aviation pilots seeking a well-kept grass airfield near Cologne with good facilities and convenient rail access, provided that PPR requirements and local procedures are strictly observed.
