I made a brief stop at Bonn-Hangelar this April to drop off my copilot and refuel. Strict adherence to the traffic pattern is recommended due to noise abatement issues with local residents; the tower will make this very clear. Otherwise, it’s a nice airfield with relatively heavy traffic and plenty of aircraft on the apron. The southbound departure along the Rhine is spectacular.

Hangelar used to be infamous for the absurdly tight tolerances they mandated when flying the pattern, however these days are over. They still expect you to follow the published pattern but nobody enforces that with distance measuring binoculars any more.
When we visited in July 2026 the guy on the radio was really friendly. We paid via Aerops so had no contact to anybody else. Landing and one night with a 1420kg Mooney was 38€ - not cheap but acceptable IMHO.

EDKB is a busy airfield with significant fixed-wing, glider, and helicopter activity, including ADAC and Bundespolizei operations. VFR only; IFR arrivals are not available, but proximity to Köln/Bonn allows for instrument approaches there with a break-off to EDKB if needed. The circuit can be challenging due to high traffic density and mixed speeds; precise adherence to the published pattern is expected for noise abatement, and the area is considered noise-sensitive. Occasional slot or PPR requirements for ultralight trikes have been inconsistently communicated—ULs may require advance written approval from the Bezirksregierung. The airfield typically closes at 20:30 local time; check official sources for current hours.
Landing fees are generally described as moderate to acceptable, though examples vary: Example: landing fee about €40. Fees are paid at the fuel station or office; credit cards are accepted. Courtesy cars are available free of charge (return with full tank), and App2Drive rental cars are also on site. Hangar parking can be arranged by phone in advance.
Facilities include a fuel station offering Avgas 100LL, Avgas 98, Mogas, and Jet A-1. There is a restaurant (Tant’ Tinchen) near the main entrance, typically closed on Mondays, as well as a club café with snacks and cake. The on-field maintenance shop includes an avionics service.
Ground access is convenient: the Stadtbahn/tram stop Hangelar-Ost is 10–15 minutes on foot from the airfield, with direct connections to Bonn (about 20 minutes) and Cologne (about 45–60 minutes). Taxis and car hire options are available; staff assist readily with transport arrangements.
The published circuit must be flown precisely for noise abatement; expect strict enforcement and possible monitoring. High traffic volumes—especially weekends—require vigilance for mixed aircraft types in the pattern. The runway is asphalt and in good condition. No winter snow/ice removal is provided.
Customs clearance for non-Schengen flights requires written notice at least 48 hours in advance and incurs a fee of about €130; procedures may change—see AIP/NOTAM for details.
Overall, EDKB offers friendly, professional service with good facilities and strong GA orientation but requires careful attention to circuit procedures due to traffic volume and local sensitivities.
