Civil Airfield Mainz/Finthen (EDFZ)

EDFZ Mainz-Finthen offers a 1000 m asphalt runway (07-25) with PAPI and a parallel grass runway, both easily accessible for general aviation. The airfield is straightforward to find and approach, with clear circuit procedures; however, strict adherence to the published circuit is required, especially to avoid noise-sensitive areas such as Wackernheim and "the Ranch." The airfield sits under the 3500 ft ring of Frankfurt airspace; after departure on RW08, an immediate right turn is necessary to avoid ETOU CTR. IFR departures are possible with VMC off the ground; squawk codes are typically provided by AFIS in coordination with Langen Radar. Procedures may vary; see AIP/NOTAM.

The infrastructure includes a large apron with ample parking, tie-downs, and hangar space. Fuel (100LL, Mogas, Jet A1) is available during AFIS hours. Landing fees for typical GA aircraft under 2 t MTOW are generally in the €20–30 range. Example: landing fee about €30. Parking incurs additional charges per day. Payment can be made via aerops. There is a maintenance facility onsite.

On-field dining options include a restaurant near the tower and the Mainzer Kaffeemanufaktur (3 minutes on foot), which offers coffee specialties, snacks, and a terrace. The restaurant's service quality has been inconsistent, with several reports of unfriendly or unprofessional behavior from management and staff since its change in leadership; many pilots prefer the nearby Kaffeemanufaktur as an alternative.

Ground transport options include app2drive car hire at the field and a bus stop ("Layenhof") about 500 m away with direct service to Mainz city center (approx. €3). Taxis are available for trips to Mainz or Wiesbaden.

The airfield emphasizes safety and correct radio procedures; controllers are generally described as friendly and professional but can be direct regarding compliance with circuit rules. Low approaches are charged at 80% of the landing fee.

Overall, EDFZ provides good facilities and access for non-commercial GA pilots, but attention to circuit discipline and local procedures is essential.
