Pilot Comments for EDFH

Last update 2020-07-09: Entry from 2017-06-27 (Philipp Tiemann, eddh.de) regarding a good IFR training airfield still applies. Hold at the HAN NDB and 3 approaches went very well. RNP with LPV now available. Unfortunately only low approach, as landing is prohibitively expensive. Depending on the day of the week, Mainz-Finthen (Tower One Restaurant) or Koblenz-Winningen (Delphi Restaurant) are good nearby options for a meal.

Frankfurt-Hahn (EDFH) offers 24-hour operations with both ILS and RNAV approaches available on its 3800m asphalt runway. The airport is frequently used for IFR and night training, but restrictions apply to multiple approaches on weekends and holidays; see AIP/NOTAM for details. The tower and ATC are consistently described as professional and supportive, and the airport is generally accommodating to general aviation, with a dedicated GA terminal (GAT) located a short walk—typically 20 meters—from parking.
Fees for non-commercial GA are notably high compared to other regional airports. Handling is mandatory for all arrivals, with recent examples showing total charges (landing plus handling) ranging from about €140 to over €220 for typical single-engine aircraft, regardless of weight or parking duration. Example: total charges about €230. Parking for short stays is usually included in the handling fee; multi-day parking may not incur extra cost in some cases. Landing-only fees are cited at about €30–€40, but handling surcharges dominate the total cost.
Facilities at the GAT include a lounge area with basic amenities such as coffee (sometimes only available on request), sofas, TV, and restrooms. The environment is functional but not always comfortable or welcoming. Payment systems may be unreliable, occasionally requiring alternative arrangements. Fuel (Avgas and Jet-A1) is available; payment by credit card is possible for fuel but not always for fees.
Ground transport options include hotel shuttles from nearby villages and car hire desks in the main terminal, which is about 400 meters from the GAT. Walking distances between parking, GAT, and terminal range from 20 to 400 meters depending on destination.
Customs and police checks are routinely available on request; advance notice may be required for international arrivals or departures. Chocks are mandatory on Apron 2 due to slope; these are provided by ground staff if needed.
Overall, EDFH provides reliable IFR access and professional ATC but imposes high costs for general aviation visitors relative to other airports in the region. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
