French language skills are essential for operations, as most procedures and paperwork require fluent French. Handling is not mandatory, and no handling company is required if you manage the process yourself. Overflight and landing permissions must be arranged well in advance, typically by fax, with follow-up calls often necessary to receive approval. Expect significant bureaucracy on arrival and departure, including multiple office visits and long waiting times; plan for up to three hours before departure. All paperwork is processed in the tower building. Upon arrival, pilots may receive a permis d'escale valid for two days instead of a visa, with passports retained by airport police during this period. Fees include about €50 for route charges and about €50 for one night of parking plus mandatory bus transport. Fluent French and patience are strongly recommended; experience in developing countries is advantageous.
