Pilot Comments for LSZA
Timo
Good airfield. Note the lunch break. ATTENTION: IFR procedures require a specific qualification. Basic qualification available via CBT. https://www.lugano-qualification.ch IFR minima are relatively high. If applicable, depart via SVFR and join later. Friendly email contact at GA handling.
Tiziano
Great aerodrome with very friendly staff. On arrival, ATC usually asks for the planned ground time. Compared to Locarno, the field is rather expensive. There is a bar on the field where you can also get light snacks. The train station is about a 10-minute walk away. Landing fee for 890 kg MTOW: 77 CHF

Lugano (LSZA) is a controlled airport focused on general aviation, with clear and professional ATC and a scenic approach over lakes and hills. The airport requires pilots to complete an online familiarisation course for certain instrument procedures, including the IGS 01 approach, which is available only to trained and certified pilots. Special qualification is needed for some SIDs and approaches; see AIP/NOTAM for details. Strict lunch closure applies from 12:00–13:30 LT, with significant fines for operations during this period. VFR departures to the north may require steep climb gradients, especially in hot weather, and can involve complex coordination with nearby Locarno CTR due to parachuting activity.
A new GA desk and improved facilities cater to private flyers. Ground handling is efficient and friendly, with marshallers guiding aircraft to parking. Avgas is available by fuel truck; the fixed pump may be out of service. The airport café is located directly at the exit, offering limited food options. Car rental is available on site, sometimes at favorable rates compared to major brokers.
Transport into Lugano city is possible by taxi or train; the Agno station is a 10-minute walk from the airport, with train fares around CHF 4 one way. Walking or cycling to Lake Lugano involves steep terrain.
Fees for landing and approach typically total CHF 60–70 for a short stay, with additional charges for parking and administration. Example: landing plus approach fee about CHF 60. Parking fees are around CHF 14 per day. Fines for violating lunch closure can be substantial (Example: fine about CHF 400). For aircraft above 3 t MTOW, handling fees apply.
Customs procedures are straightforward for Schengen arrivals; passport checks are brief when required.
Lugano offers a welcoming environment for general aviation but requires attention to procedures and operating hours.
