Pilot Comments for LPMA
Timo
Great experience on a great island. If the winds aren’t too strong, the approach is straightforward. Handling is mandatory, but with prior coordination it’s 200 Euro for 4 nights (2 Crew / 2 Pax), which is acceptable. Landing fee and parking 140 Euro (PA46-310). It does cost, but still within reason.

Madeira (LPMA) offers a scenic and memorable experience, with approaches that are generally straightforward when winds are light. Wind can present significant challenges, especially on final approach to runway 05 or 23, with turbulence and downdrafts possible due to the terrain; Porto Santo (LPPS), 15 minutes away, serves as the alternate. Slots are required and must be arranged in advance, typically via email in GCR format. Handling is sometimes mandatory and sometimes not; requirements and costs vary, so advance coordination is essential. When handling is obligatory, fees can be high—Example: handling about €200 for four nights. When not mandatory, airport fees are lower—Example: landing and parking about €140 for four nights; another example: airport fees about €40 for a two-day stop.
Fuel is available but expensive compared to mainland Europe, with prices reported around €3.20–€3.80 per liter for Avgas. Payment for fuel may require a contract or carnet; credit cards and cash are not always accepted.
Airport staff are described as friendly and helpful. No additional training is required for the approach beyond meeting AIP requirements. Parking space can be limited; check availability in advance. Security and access to aircraft are efficient, and the airport is considered GA-friendly despite its busy schedule.
Weather conditions should be checked carefully before planning a trip due to wind sensitivity on approach. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
