Civil Airfield Mauterndorf (LOSM)

Mauterndorf (LOSM) is a high-altitude alpine airfield with an elevation of 1110 m (3642 ft) and an 820 m grass runway. Operations require careful planning for density altitude, aircraft performance, weight and balance, and prevailing weather conditions. The runway is generally well maintained but can be soft or slightly uneven; takeoff distances may be significantly longer than expected, especially in warm weather. Circuit procedures involve flying around a mountain, with the airfield only visible on final approach. Approaches are through valleys and require local knowledge; for runway 07, expect a downhill slope and possible clearance even with light tailwind. Written confirmation of risk awareness before departure may be required.

The airfield operates with PPR at all times, including summer. The radio operator and staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. No restaurant is available on the field, but the town center of Mauterndorf is accessible on foot in about 10–20 minutes, offering hotels, restaurants, and local attractions such as a castle and swimming pool. Taxis are not generally available; occasional lifts from locals or use of bicycles may be possible. Hangar space and basic accommodation options exist on site.

The area offers scenic hiking trails within walking distance, with mountain cable cars located further out (about 15 minutes on foot to the Großeckbahn). The region is noted for its impressive alpine scenery.

Pilots should be alert to possible turbulence, strong downdrafts near terrain (especially with southerly winds), leewaves, and glider activity. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
