PPR is mandatory for all GA operations, with approval often difficult to obtain due to limited apron capacity and a preference for jets during busy periods. Handling is compulsory and must be arranged in advance, typically via info@corporateairservice.it or Sara.Girolami@toscana-aeroporti.com. Multiple reports describe the PPR process as bureaucratic, sometimes requiring numerous emails or online forms, and refusal is common when the airport claims to be "fully booked" or "too busy." No training flights are permitted.
Fees are consistently high and complex, with multiple surcharges. Handling, landing, parking, weekend, and technical/towing fees are all common. Example: total charges for a typical GA aircraft can reach about €400–€670 for a short stay including handling, landing, parking, weekend surcharge, and technical/towing fees. Arrivals after 8pm incur an additional €150 surcharge. Towing is frequently required as self-taxiing is not permitted; towing fees can be about €120. Example: landing fee about €40; parking about €10 per day; handling about €130–€200; weekend surcharge about €60–€70.
The airport is located very close to Florence city centre. Taxi fares to the centre range from about €20 to €45 depending on source and route. Car hire desks are in the terminal building; a shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes with a journey time of around 8 minutes.
Fuel (Avgas and Jet A1) is available at standard Italian prices. Fuel delivery is generally efficient despite airline traffic.
Operationally, approaches and departures are usually on runway 05 (landing) and 23 (departure). Approaches from the south are standard due to terrain; circle-to-land on 23 requires specific permission and briefing. Terrain near runway 05 can be steep; caution is advised especially in adverse weather. IFR slots must be coordinated after PPR approval.
Customs/immigration services are available on site for non-EU arrivals and departures.
Overall, LIRQ offers professional service but is expensive and administratively demanding for non-commercial GA pilots. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
