5 days with a TBM (3.4 t), total €156. Arrival and departure with an IFR flight plan change were absolutely trouble-free. Approach in poor weather via the Pisa ILS is possible; for departure the terrain to the east is flat, so a departure is feasible even with a ceiling of 500 ft AGL. Handling after prior notification via web form was straightforward and quick. AVIS rental car handed over directly at the terminal for an extra €100 (€50 per transaction). Runway and apron condition very good, AFIS professional.

Lucca (LIQL) is a well-maintained GA airfield with a 900–1000 m asphalt runway and professional AFIS. PPR is mandatory and typically handled quickly via email; operations are generally Wednesday to Sunday, with closure on Mondays and Tuesdays. A start-up request is required before departure, including for VFR flights. IFR arrivals and departures are coordinated with Pisa or Firenze; there are no instrument approaches, but IFR pick-up after departure is possible. Arrivals and departures may be delayed due to active parachute operations in the surrounding LI-R18 restricted area, sometimes requiring holding for up to 10–15 minutes.
Landing and parking fees are moderate for Italy, with AOPA members receiving a 20% discount. Example: landing and one night parking about €40–60; five days parking and landing about €30; three days parking and landing about €70. Fire and AFIS service fees are sometimes charged separately (about €25–€35). Taxi rides to Lucca cost about €25–€45 depending on day and time; the city is also accessible by train from a station 15–20 minutes on foot from the airfield, though the walk lacks sidewalks. Car hire can be arranged at the terminal for an extra fee.
Avgas (100LL) and Jet A1 are available, but fueling is not self-service and may require coordination with staff; payment by credit card is accepted. No mogas for visitors. Facilities include a terminal building, hard-surface parking, and a small café/bar (closed Monday/Tuesday); no restaurant reported open in 2024. Staff are described as helpful, providing assistance with taxis, accommodation, and luggage.
The airfield is suitable for non-commercial GA flights under 2 t MTOW. Customs can be arranged by advance email request but is not routinely available. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM. Lucca offers convenient access to its historic city center as well as Pisa and Florence by train or taxi.
