What other pilots say about LGST

2019-10-01 00:00:00 UTC

LGST is right next to LGIR and is significantly faster, cheaper, and more pleasant than Heraklion, with no slots, etc. However, the operating hours are completely ridiculous; there’s no other way to put it. Extensions are possible on request. AVGAS €3.50, landing €54 via Skyserv with AOPA discount for a Cessna 206. For Greece, it’s a good GA field.

Sitia (LGST) is a GA-friendly airport in eastern Crete, equipped with instrument approaches and a long runway. Avgas 100LL is available, typically dispensed from drums; payment and fueling are handled on opposite sides of the runway, requiring repositioning. Handling is mandatory and provided by Skyserv, with AOPA membership often resulting in significant discounts on fees. Opening hours are limited and closely tied to the sparse commercial schedule; PPR is required, ideally requested at least a week in advance. Extensions to opening times may be possible on request.

Fees are generally low for Greece, especially with AOPA discounts. Example: landing, handling, and five days parking about €40. Handling agencies vary in cost-effectiveness; Skyserv is usually preferred for GA, while GoldAir is described as expensive. Customs and police checks can be slow or bureaucratic, with document checks even on domestic flights within Greece.

Strong crosswinds are common, especially from the north or southeast, making approaches challenging at times; the approach to runway 23 is over water toward a cliff threshold with an immediate right turn required after missed approach due to terrain. FOD may be present on the ramp. Aircraft should be secured against Saharan dust during south winds.

Facilities include a modern terminal and basic ground services; tie-downs are available with anchor points in concrete. Sitia town is accessible by taxi (about €10), but the airport is relatively remote and car hire is recommended for exploring the region. Sitia serves as an official airport of entry for Schengen arrivals and departures.

Overall, LGST offers efficient operations and good value for non-commercial GA flights but requires careful attention to opening hours, wind conditions, and procedural details.
