Pilot Comments for LGIO
Achim
After Korfu became extremely expensive, Ioannina is the best AVGAS stop in northern Greece. Handling is good and friendly; €76 with AOPA discount for a Cessna 206 overnight via Skyserv. AVGAS €3. The opening hours are, in a typically Greek way, absolutely ridiculous and a waste of the excellent infrastructure. No less odd is the strict, extensive, and time-consuming passport control when arriving from Greece and when flying on to Schengen/EU.

LGIO requires PPR, which is typically a straightforward process, and handling is mandatory. Opening hours vary significantly and may include multi-hour daytime closures; always check NOTAMs for current times. Skyserv is the main handling agent, with staff described as friendly and responsive via ioasm@skyserv.aero. ATC is professional, and procedures are generally smooth, though some reports mention special requirements for flight plan filing—departures must file via the tower, not Athens AIS or apps.
Fees vary widely depending on timing, services, and discounts. Handling, landing, and parking for a short stop with AOPA discount can be about €50–€70; examples include about €50–€65 with AOPA card. For longer stays or without discounts, fees can be much higher: Example: landing plus two nights’ parking about €210; another example: one night with handling about €60. Customs/immigration surcharges may apply, especially on weekends (Example: customs charge about €140 on weekends; weekday rate is half). Some reports mention additional charges for special services (Example: apron access for spare part delivery about €180). Payment for fuel may be cash-only or by credit card/BP card.
Avgas and Jet A1 are available; Avgas supply may require 48-hour PPR. Refueling can sometimes be slow but is generally uncomplicated. Car hire is available at the terminal; taxis to the city cost about €20 (cash only), while the bus in front of the terminal offers a flat rate of €2 per person per ride. The city itself is considered attractive and affordable compared to Greek islands.
Approaches require attention due to surrounding mountains; strict control approaches are needed, especially from the north (minimum FL120 until late in approach). IFR arrivals should review plates carefully. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Customs/immigration are available on request (often 24 hours’ notice required). The airport serves as a port of entry/exit for Greece and Schengen/EU flights.
LGIO offers efficient service and good value with AOPA discounts but requires careful planning around opening hours and procedures.
