Pilot Comments for LFGA
Tobias
Very good, straightforward airfield for training and visits to the beautiful city. The field is controlled but has no control zone, and the IFR procedures are entirely in Class G airspace. Repeated approaches are also possible, no pleading or prior notice—just fly in. Payment via AeroPS or at the terminal. Access to the airside is by entering the TWR frequency at the entrance gate. Parking on asphalt is sometimes not possible despite generous apron space. For VFR arrivals and departures, observe the overflight prohibitions to the north and south (city center).

Absolutely recommended, also for training! Controller friendly, easy to understand, and flexible. Payment via Aerops is possible; alternatively at the fire department in the main building (not always staffed). Maintenance facility and hotel on the field. NVFR, IFR and PCL (the latter PPR) are available. Landing fee up to 2 t only 13.50 Euro, touch-and-go only 6.75 Euro! Refueling via AirBP card.
Michael
Absolutely positive experience for an IFR training flight from Switzerland on 14.11. Landing fees paid via Aerops; per approach/landing €6.4 for training, otherwise €12.80 for a C182. AVGAS €1.74 per liter. Attention: Customs notification must be submitted 24h in advance!

LFGA (Colmar-Houssen) is a well-equipped, GA-friendly airport with both VFR and IFR procedures, including RNAV and NDB approaches. No PPR is required for VFR or IFR arrivals, but a flight plan is mandatory. Customs/immigration requires 24-hour prior notice for all international flights, including intra-Schengen; use cli-metz@douane.finances.gouv.fr or the form on the airport website. Night operations outside ATS hours require advance coordination with the airport operator.
Landing fees for aircraft under 2 tonnes are low, typically about €20 when paid in person; payment via AeroPS app is possible but may be more expensive. Example: landing and 24h parking about €20. Grass parking is well maintained and often free for short stays; reinforced grass stands are available. Self-service refueling (100LL and Jet A1) is available with BP card; payment by cash or credit card may also be possible. Fueling can be handled by staff if needed.
The terminal is open until 17:00 local time; after closing, access to the apron is via a side gate using a code provided on arrival or posted by the door. Facilities include toilets, drinks, free WiFi in the terminal, and vending machines. Several hotels (F1, ibis Styles, B&B, Campanile, Novotel) are within walking distance (5–15 minutes). Restaurants are available in the nearby industrial area (Leon and WOK 168), as the Courtepaille at ibis Styles is closed.
Ground transport options include taxis (typically €15–€25 to city center), Uber (availability varies), and bus line D/7 (green line) to the city center for about €2 per person; bus stops are near the terminal and run every 15–45 minutes on weekdays but not on Sundays. Bicycle paths connect directly to Colmar's center. Europcar rental service operates at the airport but may be closed weekends; staff can assist with key handover.
ATC is friendly and effective, providing service in English during tower hours; outside these times, operations revert to auto-information in French only. The runway is long and suitable for all GA types; approaches are straightforward with no vectors to final due to uncontrolled airspace. Note that night landings incur significant lighting surcharges.
Colmar-Houssen offers efficient handling, low fees, easy access to a picturesque city center, and reliable facilities for non-commercial GA pilots. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for operational details. For customs: cli-metz@douane.finances.gouv.fr
