Handling is required for customs/border police clearance, especially for flights entering or leaving the Schengen area. Several handling agents operate, including South Europe Ground Services, Andaluzia Handling Services, and AGA, with service described as efficient and friendly. Advance handling notification is advised; email responses may be delayed, so calling is more effective. Self-handling may be possible for domestic or intra-Schengen flights, but handlers are generally needed for international movements.
Fees vary depending on the handler and services used. For short stops involving landing and one hour of parking, combined charges (landing plus mandatory handling) are about €80. Example: landing and one hour parking about €40; mandatory handling about €50. Another example: handling about €110–140 including all fees for customs and fuel stop. For a week of parking plus landing, charges are around €180. Service is generally efficient with quick turnarounds (typically 40–60 minutes).
The GA apron is well sheltered from wind. General parking is available in a designated area of the main apron. All areas can be reached on foot; walking distance to the terminal is approximately 600 meters. Wearing a yellow safety vest on the apron is mandatory.
Fuel is available but requires providing a nine-digit tax number; this applies even if not seeking tax exemption. Some handlers speak German.
Customs and passport control are thorough but straightforward when using a handler. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for operational details.
Almeria (LEAM) offers efficient handling and suitable facilities for non-commercial general aviation flights requiring customs clearance or technical stops.
