Sofia Airport (LBSF) is a large international airport open H24, suitable for non-commercial general aviation. Mandatory handling and airport slots are required; both are easily arranged by email, with slots coordinated via slot.coordination@sofia-airport.bg and handling requests typically sent to ramp-control@sof-connect.com. Bulgarian CAA permission is also required before arrival; see AIP for instructions. The AOPA membership card provides a significant discount on handling fees, reducing them to about €20; without it, handling can be four times higher. Example: total charges for landing, two nights parking, basic handling, and ramp transport about €220. Parking is on hard stands and the runway is well maintained.
Avgas 100LL and Jet A1 are available at the airport, but fuel prices are high compared to regional alternatives. Ground staff and handlers are generally professional and helpful, though occasional delays at security have occurred. The airport is busy with scheduled airline traffic; VFR arrivals may experience holding due to traffic volume. The airfield is surrounded by significant high ground.
Ground transport options include a metro connection to the city center. Example: metro fare about 2 Lev. Taxis to the city center are also available.
Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM. Sofia offers efficient service and good facilities for GA, though costs are higher than smaller regional airports.
