Essaouira (GMMI) operates from sunrise to sunset with generally efficient and friendly handling. French language skills are very helpful. The airport typically sees limited scheduled flights and low general aviation traffic, resulting in a relaxed atmosphere. No handling is required for general aviation.
Landing and parking fees are low; Example: landing and one night parking about €20. Payment for landing fees can be made by card, while fuel must be paid in cash (EUR, MAD, or USD). Avgas is available, usually from drums, and payment in cash euros is widely accepted; small notes are recommended as change may be treated as a tip. When paying in local currency, an exchange receipt or ATM slip may be required. There is no ATM on site.
Fuel service is prompt if requested on arrival. The "C" office is located in the tower building. Flight plans are filed on paper forms; electronic filing is not supported locally. Briefing facilities are basic.
The airport is located well outside Essaouira town. Taxis are not always available unless a scheduled flight is due; airport staff can help arrange one if needed. Typical taxi fare to town is about €20, and the ride takes approximately 15 km.
Customs and police procedures are straightforward and quick. Security checks can be thorough. No catering or restaurant facilities are available at the airport.
Strong crosswinds are common on approach, especially from the south. For VFR flights, both TWR (118.25) and APP (119.8) frequencies are used. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Essaouira offers a simple but efficient entry point into Morocco for non-commercial general aviation with low costs and helpful staff, though ground transport requires advance planning due to the remote location and limited taxi availability.
