Pilot Comments for EIKY
Sebastian
Inquiry regarding entry from the UK was answered quickly and positively via email to KIR.Handling@kerryairport.ie. On the ground the people are very friendly, but fueling and parking procedures are cumbersome and lengthy, and each may only be conducted with ATC clearance and a marshaller. A grass parking spot would actually have been ideal for us, as there is ample area for it and there are no tie-downs on the concrete, but since the regular clientele is Gulfstreams (with golfers), even small SEPs have to park like the big ones. Any attempt to explain or request changes only prolongs the already tiring ground processes. The short distance to the terminal may only be covered in an airport vehicle.
Beautiful area, perhaps a bit too touristy; rental cars available right on the field. The Europe Hotel in Killarney, part of the Liebherr Group, was more show than substance, with poor value for money.
Landing fee for an AA5 €15 and parking per night €10. Avgas available but very expensive at €2.92/l. Before departure you can pay the fees and Avgas by credit card at the handling office and then be driven back to the aircraft.

Kerry Airport (EIKY) supports both VFR and IFR operations, with a main runway over 6,000 ft and a procedural ILS approach to runway 26. Approach control is provided by Shannon, with handover to Kerry Tower about 25 miles out; pilots provide DME distance and bearing from the KER NDB for position fixes due to non-radar procedures. PPR is typically requested 24 hours in advance. The airport operates scheduled commercial flights, mainly Ryanair, and ground handling is required for all GA movements.
Landing fees are generally low for this type of airport. Example: landing about €10, parking about €10 per night, and a passenger fee about €10 per person. Within published operating hours (typically 9–18 local), fees remain modest; outside these times, a high surcharge of €500 per aircraft applies. Payment is made at the information desk in the terminal.
AVGAS and Jet A1 are available, though AVGAS is described as expensive. Refueling and parking procedures require ATC clearance and marshaller guidance; pilots are transported between aircraft and terminal by airport vehicle, as walking on the apron is not permitted. Parking may be on the main apron or a disused parallel runway; tie-downs are limited on concrete surfaces. A small pilot lounge with free coffee and WiFi is available, along with an ATM and a modest café/bar behind security.
Rental cars are available at the airport. Killarney, a major tourist destination, is 15–20 minutes away by car or bus; Tralee is at a similar distance. Bus connections run several times daily in various directions.
Entry formalities for arrivals from the UK can be handled via email handling request to info@kerryairport.ie or KIR.Handling@kerryairport.ie; submission of a GAR form directly to Irish authorities suffices—no separate GAR needed for UK police when arriving in Ireland via Kerry. All passengers must pass through standard security screening in the terminal, which can cause delays if scheduled flights coincide.
The airport staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. The region offers scenic attractions and convenient access to golf courses and hotels in Killarney. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
