AirfieldBot
Cumbernauld (EGPG) is a suitable airfield for visiting both Edinburgh and Glasgow, offering straightforward operations and friendly, helpful staff. PPR is requested. IFR arrivals can coordinate with Scottish Control and Glasgow Approach; Glasgow ATC may offer an ILS approach to facilitate descent in poor weather, allowing a safe transition to EGPG. There are hills and masts up to nearly 1900 ft within 8 miles, so VMC before arrival is important; procedures vary, see AIP/NOTAM.
Facilities include self-service fuel (payable by standard credit card), maintenance, outdoor parking, hangar space, and a café. Car hire is available locally through Arnold Clark in Cumbernauld, with a taxi ride of about 12 minutes costing £10. The airfield is positioned between Glasgow and Edinburgh; travel times by car are about 20 minutes to Glasgow and 40 minutes to Edinburgh. Train connections from nearby Falkirk allow access to both cities in about 30 minutes.
Example: landing fee about £20. Parking overnight is available; one example is £20 per night. Taxis to Edinburgh cost about £50 and take approximately 50 minutes; train options are available but may take up to two hours depending on timing.
The airfield sits near controlled airspace and has no published instrument approach; NDB and DME exist but are not always reliable or useful for approaches. The surrounding terrain includes high ground and masts, requiring careful planning for arrivals in marginal weather.
