AirfieldBot
Emden (EDWE) offers both VFR and IFR operations, including RNAV (GPS) approaches for fixed-wing aircraft to both runway ends. IFR arrivals and departures incur additional surcharges. PPR by phone is available for extended opening hours, with a contact number of +49 4921 42434. The airfield is used by helicopters serving offshore operations, resulting in frequent helicopter traffic, but tower staff sequence GA flights efficiently. Some taxiways and runway thresholds are reported as uneven; check NOTAMs for details.
Landing fees for single-engine aircraft are typically in the €20–€30 range, with IFR surcharges and additional fees for lighting and parking. Example: landing and parking about €30; IFR surcharge about €30; parking about €10 per day after the first four hours. Payment is not accepted in cash; a direct debit authorization is required. Customs/immigration can be arranged on request for flights to or from the UK with prior phone coordination with the tower.
AVGAS is available at a self-service pump, paid together with landing fees in the tower. Tie-downs are available with concrete weights or ground anchors; parking space can be limited during busy periods, so arranging a spot in advance is advisable for longer stays. Maintenance support is available on site.
A bus stop is located 700 meters from the terminal, providing cost-effective access to the city center within about 7–15 minutes on foot. Taxis to town cost around €13–€15 and take about 10 minutes. Bicycles are sometimes available at the airfield, occasionally free of charge.
The on-field restaurant has inconsistent opening hours and may be closed; alternatives in nearby Leer-Papenburg offer better reliability and value. Noisy or abrupt service has been noted at times in administrative areas, but ATC staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful.
Wildlife, especially deer near the runway, has previously caused operational restrictions such as no night operations and early airport closure before sunset; a perimeter fence has since been installed to address this issue, but procedures may vary—see AIP/NOTAM. Crosswinds of 10–20 kt are common due to prevailing winds.
Emden is suitable for non-commercial general aviation flights seeking efficient handling, IFR capability, fuel stops, or access to the region by public transport or bicycle.
