Pilot Comments for EDQE
hawaiian air
Spectacular approach through the valleys to the “aircraft carrier” EDQE. The runway has a noticeable slope; take it into account depending on whether you’re departing/landing or arriving from the west/east. Radio is friendly and straightforward. As of 09/25, the on-field restaurant is open only Saturday afternoon and Sunday at lunchtime during VFR-friendly hours. On weekdays, it’s open only in the evening. Although the restaurant’s website says cash only, on request they provide a PayPal account, and flight operations also offered, if necessary, to arrange a solution via Aerops involving a cash payout. Great airfield!

EDQE (Burg Feuerstein) sits on a scenic plateau with a distinctive undulating runway profile. The runway features a pronounced hump ("Katzenbuckel"), making parts of it not visible from certain points, especially on runway 26 where the slope falls away after about 200 meters, and on runway 08 where the runway rises up to the halfway mark. This can affect situational awareness during takeoff and landing. The airfield closes relatively early at 18:00 local time, and PPR is required from late November through spring. The circuit is straightforward, but crosswind and wind conditions can make approaches challenging, particularly on runway 08 due to terrain effects.
The airfield offers Avgas and UL91 fuel; Mogas is also available. Parking areas and grass tie-downs are in good condition, with camping permitted on site. Facilities include a restaurant serving German and Italian cuisine, though opening hours may be limited (kitchen opens from 17:00; Monday is rest day). A café atmosphere with terrace seating is available, and a pilot shop operates within the flight school. Accommodation can be arranged locally, with transport to nearby guesthouses sometimes provided by staff or local contacts.
The environment is welcoming, with professional radio service and helpful staff. Hiking opportunities start directly at the airfield, including a planet-themed walking trail and access to Burg Feuerstein castle. The area sees significant glider activity alongside powered traffic; vigilance for traffic is advised.
Example: landing fee about €10.
