Dortmund (EDLW) is a controlled airport with both IFR and VFR procedures, offering ILS approaches on both runways and generally professional, friendly ATC and ground staff. The airport is suitable for cross-country IFR training and accommodates general aviation with a dedicated GA terminal (GAT), though the GAT is located some distance from the main terminal, requiring a 7–10 minute walk or shuttle bus. Taxiways to the GA apron are notably long, sometimes involving hairpin turns and elevation changes.
Fees are widely described as high for general aviation, with multiple reports of complex billing including separate charges for landing, parking, infrastructure, security, emissions, and optional items such as warning lights or storm tie-downs. Charges for a typical overnight stay since 2021 range from about €70 to €190 depending on services and duration; single-day visits can be lower but still above average for the region. Example: total fee for one night about €110. Optional services like warning lights or storm tie-downs may add €15–€25 each. A training discount of 25% on landing fees is available. Some reports mention that hangar parking can be less expensive than outdoor parking when warning lights are required.
The airport operates with extended hours suitable for GA and offers self-service Avgas (BP card accepted) at the GA ramp; Jet-A is available but may require waiting for the fuel truck. Facilities at the GAT are basic: a pilot lounge with coffee/snack machines and paid or occasionally free WiFi; there is no restaurant at the GAT itself, but a café/restaurant is available in the main terminal. A small budget hotel is located at the terminal.
Security procedures can be time-consuming, especially during busy periods or when traveling with passengers; expect to show ID and license when returning airside. All passengers must also pass through security checks. For access to public transport or taxis, you must go via the main terminal; walking distance from GAT is 7–10 minutes, with shuttle bus service available on weekdays. Taxis are only available at the main terminal; rideshare services may not be present.
A noise certificate is required for reduced fees. For certain aircraft types (e.g., motor gliders), PPR by phone is mandatory despite ambiguous AIP wording—procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Overall, Dortmund provides reliable infrastructure and friendly service but at relatively high cost and with some procedural complexity for general aviation users.
