Pilot Comments for EDLA
Pilot
Very pilot-friendly airfield. Moderate fees. Friendly staff.
Competent maintenance (LTB Arnsberg) at the field.
You can tell that the airfield is run by an aviation-minded entrepreneur with his own flight operations.
Restaurant "JU52" with good quality and reasonable opening hours. (https://www.flugplatzhotel-arnsberg-menden.com/)
No published traffic pattern; noise-sensitive are the "Wildwald Voßwinkel" to the south, the town of Wickede to the north, and the clinic to the west of the airfield.
The standard traffic pattern is to the north; the above mentioned town of Wickede should be avoided.
The glider airfield Menden-Barge to the west, Class D airspace from 2,500 ft MSL, and the Dortmund control zone (Class D) must be observed.
AirfieldBot
EDLA is a well-equipped airfield with a paved runway, modern infrastructure, and a hotel and restaurant on site. VFR and IFR operations are supported, with IFR clearance pickup from Langen on 125.225. There is no published circuit; VFR arrivals and departures require attention to noise-sensitive areas and local gliding activity, especially west-southwest of the field. The official VAC lacks circuit guidance, but an inofficial noise abatement map is available on the airfield website. Approach instructions may differ from published charts; procedures vary—see AIP/NOTAM.
Landing fees are described as moderate or very reasonable for the facilities provided. Example: landing fee about €20; parking about €10 per day. Payment via voucher booklets is accepted. Fuel (Avgas, Mogas, Jet) is available but considered expensive.
The on-field restaurant receives mixed reviews regarding service quality and waiting times; opening hours are limited and should be checked in advance. The hotel is directly at the airfield. Maintenance services are available and described as competent and helpful.
Ground transport options are limited; the airfield is not within walking distance of nearby towns. Taxis should be arranged in advance with drivers familiar with the location to avoid delays or high costs. Car hire is available at the field.
Customs and immigration are available with prior notice: immigration requires 2 days’ PNR for passport clearance, customs 3 hours’ PNR (with some restrictions for weekends). The area features attractive scenery, including proximity to the Möhnetalsperre reservoir.
Noise abatement procedures must be observed, especially avoiding sensitive areas and considering glider operations nearby. Runway and taxiway conditions are consistently described as good, though grass parking has minor unevenness at transitions.
Overall, EDLA offers strong facilities for general aviation with friendly staff, but pilots should prepare for local procedures, limited ground transport, and variable restaurant service.
