EDHK offers both VFR and IFR operations, including instrument approaches on both runways. The approach over the Kieler Förde is scenic and uncomplicated, with no published circuit; arrivals are flexible but require attention to a restricted area southeast of the field that extends to pattern altitude. IFR pilots should check NOTAMs for possible work in progress near the runway and coordinate early with ATC if the restricted area is active, as this can affect RNP approaches to runway 26. Procedures may vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
Landing fees and parking are generally considered moderate for an airport of this size. Example: landing and 24-hour parking about €30. Payment is handled via a self-service terminal at the GAT entrance, which accepts credit cards and is straightforward to use. No Aerops system is available. Facilities include ample parking, tie-downs with grass and asphalt options (note: grass tie-downs may be soft after rain), and a well-regarded on-field restaurant with terrace seating. There is no crew room or briefing area, only minimal seating near the airside exit, and no WiFi.
Fueling is efficient, typically handled by a fuel truck soon after arrival, but avgas prices are described as high compared to nearby airfields. Maintenance services are available on site.
Ground transport options are good: a bus stop is directly in front of the GAT, with buses to Kiel Hauptbahnhof running every 15–30 minutes depending on day and time; journey time is about 20–27 minutes each way. Cycling into town takes about 25 minutes via a dedicated path. Taxis are readily available; fares to central Kiel are around €20. Rental cars can be arranged but may require advance booking or pickup from the main train station.
Wearing a high-visibility vest on the apron is mandatory and enforced. Operating hours are relatively short (typically until 18:00 local on weekdays), with PPR required for out-of-hours operations; surcharges apply for extensions.
Customs require 48 hours prior notice (PNR). The airport is suitable for non-commercial general aviation flights and offers friendly service throughout.
