Civil Airfield Wuerzburg Schenkenturm (EDFW)

EDFW is a well-maintained airfield situated on a hilltop close to Würzburg, offering scenic approaches and panoramic views over the city and surrounding vineyards. The paved runway is 670 meters long and can feel short, especially at high density altitude or maximum weight; turbulence, wind shear, and lee waves may occur due to the exposed plateau location and nearby solar panels, particularly on approach to runway 11 with northerly winds. Strict adherence to the published circuit is required to avoid overflying noise-sensitive areas; direct approaches may be possible but are not guaranteed.

Controllers and ground staff are consistently described as friendly, helpful, and professional. The airfield provides Avgas, Jet A, and Mogas at the on-site fuel station. Parking is available on grass surfaces in good condition; hangar space is available for overnight stays. Example: overnight hangar about €20. Landegebühren are generally low; Example: landing fee about €30. Payment by EC card is accepted.

A well-regarded Italian restaurant (Mandino) is located directly at the field with terrace seating and city views; service quality varies but food is generally praised for value. The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Additional facilities include a PC for weather/briefing and car hire or car-sharing options near the tower.

Würzburg city center is 8–15 minutes away by taxi, with fares typically around €20 per trip. Walking into town is not recommended due to distance (5–6 km) and main roads. The area offers attractive excursions such as vineyard hikes down to Veitshöchheim or visits to local landmarks like Käppele or Nikolaushof.

The airfield closes relatively early (typically 18:30 due to noise restrictions), but limited extensions may be possible by arrangement without extra PPR fees. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM for operational details.
