Civil Airfield Rothenburg O.D.T. (EDFR)

EDFR offers a straightforward arrival with a 950–1020 metre hard runway and generally friendly, helpful staff. AFIS provides minimal intervention, focusing on essential information like active runway and parachuting activity; pilots coordinate among themselves for traffic sequencing. Regular parachute operations and occasional sailplane or training activity occur, so situational awareness is important. Parking is typically on grass, which may be uneven or have rodent holes; caution is advised when taxiing or parking, especially after rain.

Landing fees are low. Example: landing about €10. Bicycles are available free of charge (with a deposit for the lock), making the 10–20 minute ride into Rothenburg’s historic city center easy; the city is also reachable by taxi for about €15. Hangar space may be available with prior arrangement. Camping under the wing is possible by prior agreement.

On-field facilities include an Italian restaurant/pizzeria with a beer garden overlooking the apron, generally well regarded though sometimes busy; opening days may vary (typically closed Mondays). There is also an honesty-box fridge for drinks in the club room. Fuel (Avgas) is available; payment and coordination handled by tower staff.

The airfield is considered an excellent destination for visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s medieval attractions, with many pilots recommending both the airfield and the city for day trips or overnight stays. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.
