EDFJ is a Sonderlandeplatz located within the ED-R of a military training area but is accessible to the general public, with agreements in place permitting arrivals. PPR may be granted by radio, especially on weekends when someone is usually available on frequency. The airfield sits above the Saale valley at over 1000 ft elevation, with a 500 m asphalt runway. Approaches can be challenging due to surrounding terrain and optical illusions, particularly for right-hand circuits to runway 27. The runway has a noticeable hump and slopes down toward 10; starts in direction 10 with motor aircraft are not permitted between 13:00 and 15:00.
The atmosphere is welcoming, with a strong sense of aviation community. On weekends, coffee, homemade cake, and meals are available at the clubhouse. Avgas and SuperPlus fuel are available. Parking assistance and tie-downs are provided.
Access to Hammelburg involves a path through Bundeswehr grounds; on weekends this is generally open, but reaching town requires climbing over 150 steps. Burg Saaleck is about 15 minutes away on foot; Schloss Saaleck is around 30 minutes’ walk and offers dining.
Example: landing fee about €5.
