Pilot Comments for EDFE
Felix
The airfield lies within a TMZ/ATC/RMZ with AFIS, radar support, and arrival/departure routes. It borders Class D and is directly beneath Frankfurt Class D/C, so mind altitude and position. A long asphalt runway and a grass runway are available, also for parallel operations (no T&Gs there). Flying in the southern traffic pattern is only possible on request for noise abatement. In winter, night operations between ECET and 21:00 LT are possible with PPR— till 19:00LT at no extra cost. UL aircraft generally require PPL and PPR. On the field there are AVGAS, JET and UL91, as well as several flight schools, clubs, and the Röder Präzision GmbH workshop. IFR procedures are not available. The Brazilian rodizio restaurant overlooking the apron is not geared toward pilots; a few meters further the “Gute Landung” beer garden awaits. For onward travel, e-bikes and App2Drive cars are available; Egelsbach S-Bahn station is about a 21-minute walk, from there it’s only 24 minutes to Frankfurt (Hauptwache).

Egelsbach (EDFE) requires precise adherence to published VFR arrival and departure routes due to complex surrounding airspace and proximity to Frankfurt. The airport does not have IFR procedures, but IFR/VFR transitions are coordinated with Frankfurt; departures on Z flight plans typically require maintaining VFR at 1500 ft initially, with handoff and climb after leaving the local area. Strict compliance with circuit procedures is expected, and controllers may issue warnings for deviations. The airport is not approved for aerodynamically controlled ultralight aircraft without a special permit from the regional authority, and applicants must hold at least a PPL-A.
Customs and passport control are available without separate prior notice if a flight plan is filed; processing is described as quick and efficient. Fuel is available via BP self-serve station (Carnet Card required for UL91), with both cash and card accepted. Maintenance support is present on site, and technical assistance can be arranged promptly if needed. Parking is generally sufficient, with short walking distances from aircraft to ground transport.
Ground transport options include taxis (to Frankfurt about €40, Offenbach about €40, 20 minutes), car hire via App2Drive or Sixt arranged through the airport office, and a train station 10–14 minutes on foot from the field providing direct access to Frankfurt. Restaurants are located on site ("Gute Landung" and others), with additional options such as Naturfreundehaus within 200 meters; food quality and pricing vary by establishment.
Facilities include professional flight operations staff, though some reports note variable friendliness or customer service tone. Taxiway markings may be hard to see in places. The airport building is functional but basic; WLAN access may be unreliable.
Landing fees are described as medium to high for the region. Example: landing plus one night parking about €30; landing fee about €10–€30 depending on aircraft weight; day parking around €10. For N-registered aircraft under 2 t without German noise certificates, double landing fees apply.
Egelsbach offers efficient access to Frankfurt for general aviation but requires careful preflight preparation due to airspace complexity and procedural strictness. See AIP/NOTAM for current procedures.
