Civil Airfield Welzow (EDCY)

Very friendly and helpful staff. Landing and overnight fees are low; Example: landing fee about €10. Free shuttle service to parking shelters is available. Taxi availability can be limited and prices are higher; on occasion, staff have provided rides to hotels when taxis were unavailable. Rental cars are available from the local club for about €50 per day, and bicycles may be borrowed free of charge. No direct public transport connection exists; reaching nearby towns requires a taxi, rental car, or a 10-minute cycle to train stations with hourly service to Cottbus in about 20 minutes.

The airfield features a large 2000 m asphalt runway and extensive parking in former military shelters. The runway and taxiways show signs of age with grass growing through cracks and some unevenness, but remain usable without risk of aircraft damage. Approach is straightforward; on runway 04, expect turbulence in crosswind conditions and possible wake effects near the forest edge. Procedures vary; see AIP/NOTAM.

A small café or restaurant operates on the field, typically open on weekends, serving coffee, cake, and light meals at modest prices. No Wi-Fi is available; a coin-operated phone is present. The area offers scenic artificial lakes suitable for cycling and boating excursions, as well as tours of the nearby open-cast lignite mine. Accommodation can be arranged locally, sometimes with assistance from staff or the restaurant manager.

Maintenance support is accessible via a neighboring airfield in Kamenz if needed. The overall atmosphere is quiet and welcoming, with an emphasis on personal service for visiting general aviation pilots.
